
Overpowering Offence: Stamps prove too much for Riders

CALGARY-- The Stampeders proved why they are contenders for first place in the West on Saturday afternoon as they further hammered the nail in the coffin of the Riders' disappointing season with a 42-19 victory at McMahon Stadium.
The Calgary offence registered four touchdowns in the win, scoring three of those in the first half.
Jerome Messam made his debut for Calgary against his former team, racking up 15 carries and 121 yards in the Stamps' dominant performance.
The game was a must win for Calgary to remain in contention for the top spot in the West. The Stamps can clinch the division if the Edmonton Eskimos lose to the Montreal Alouettes on Nov. 1 and Calgary wins its final regular season match against the BC Lions on Nov. 7.
Fans who decked out in their finest Hallowe'en threads were not disappointed with the home team’s showing as the game was all Calgary from start to finish.
The Stamps got off to a quick start against the Green and White as Tory Harrison ran 59 yards on the opening kick return to place Calgary deep into Saskatchewan territory. Mitchell found Rogers deep in the middle of the end zone a few plays later for Rogers’ ninth touchdown of the year, tying him with BC's Emmanuel Arceneux for second in the league. The Stamps opted to try for two extra points and a Saskatchewan pass interference call on the first attempt moved Calgary to the one yard line. The Stamps capitalized on their improved field position as Mitchell handed the ball off to Messam, who made the short run into the end zone to give Calgary an early 8-0 lead.
The Green and White would respond on their first drive of the game as Smith found Weston Dressler for a 17-yard catch. Smith rushed for a crucial first down a few plays later, but a sack by Derek Wiggan on a second down would force the Riders to attempt a field goal. Tyler Crapigna notched the kick from 43 yards out to cut the Stamps’ lead to 8-3.
Calgary quickly moved down the field on its second possession of the game as Mitchell connected with West for 24 yards on the first throw of the drive. The play led to a 24-yard touchdown by Rogers, his second of the quarter, to further extend the Stamps' chokehold over the Riders. With the touchdown, Rogers tied Toronto’s Tori Gurley for the most touchdowns this season. The Red and White opted to once again try for the two-point conversion and Mitchell made no mistake, finding Marquay McDaniel to extend the lead to 16-3.
A Riders’ two-and-out placed the ball back in the hands of the Stampeders to begin the second quarter. Calgary made its way down the field and Rene Paredes would cap off the drive with a 19-yard field goal to further pull away from the Riders.

Calgary continued to relentlessly pick apart the Riders' defence. As the quarter continued, Mitchell made a 19-yard pass to Rogers, setting up a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe West for Calgary’s second major of the game. Paredes’ extra point extended the lead to 26-3.
Saskatchewan would not go down without a fight and on the ensuing drive, Smith found Dressler wide open downfield for a 35 yard gain. A roughing the passer call on the same play moved the Riders up another 15-yards and Anthony Allen ran the ball into the end zone a few plays later for the Riders first major of the game. Crapigna’s extra point cut the Stamps’ lead to 26-10.
Paredes notched his second field goal of the afternoon with 1:22 remaining in the quarter to end the half at 29-10.
Keith Price replaced Smith at the start of the second half for the Riders. Saskatchewan decided to gamble on a third down in the red zone on its opening drive of the third quarter, but ultimately came up short as Price’s pass to Ryan Smith in the end zone was out of reach.
Mitchell orchestrated a steady drive up the field midway through the third quarter, leading his team to the one-yard line. Bryant Moniz made the short run into the end zone for the Stamps’ fourth major of the afternoon as the team carried a 36-10 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Both teams put up field goals in the final quarter as Crapigna added three more points for the for the Riders while Paredes notched six more for his team.
Saskatchewan ended on a strong note as Naaman Roosevelt took a pass from Price and bounced between the Stamps defence and into the end zone with 2:06 remaining in the final quarter to end the game at 42-19.
The Riders will close out their season on Nov. 8 when they travel to Molson Percival Stadium to take on the Montreal Alouettes.
