Stout Defense Leads Sharks Past KISS,, 46-32

July 24, 2016
Jacksonville - The Jacksonville Sharks forced four stops on defense and scored on their first six offensive possessions, as that combined team effort led to a 46-32 victory in front of 11,840 on Sea Best Field at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night.

The Jacksonville (6-9) defense changed the tone of the game with back-to-back defensive stops in the first half. With the score tied at seven late in the first quarter, Los Angeles (7-8) faced a fourth-and-10 from the Sharks’ 12-yard line. As the Sharks’ pass rush bore down on the KISS” signal-caller, the Jacksonville secondary maintained tight coverage, forcing a rushed throw that missed wide of its intended receiver. After the turnover on downs, the Sharks marched down the field, as a two-yard rushing touchdown by Derrick Ross gave Jacksonville the lead for good, 13-7.

On the KISS’ ensuing possession, the Sharks’ defense stepped up again. This time, another rushed throw wound up behind Los Angeles receiver Donovan Morgan, as the Sharks forced their second turnover on downs in as many drives. Five plays later, the Jacksonville offense cashed in with another score, as Tommy Grady hit Joe Hills for a four-yard touchdown to extend the Sharks’ lead to 20-7.

After the two teams traded touchdowns, the Sharks came up big in the final seconds of the first half. Khreem Smith tracked down Fred Williams following a long catch-and-run, tackling the KISS receiver as time expired. The stop allowed Jacksonville to maintain a two-score lead at halftime, as the Sharks went into the locker room with a 26-13 lead.

Throughout the course of the first half, the Sharks’ front four provided consistent pressure. Though they did not record a sack in the first half, Jacksonville got to Thomas on several occasions and forced a pair of offensive holding calls as well. That relentless pass rush continued in the second half, as Jordan Miller took down Thomas for his first career sack, and Neefy Moffett and Cornelius Lewis split a sack of their own in the fourth quarter.

The Sharks’ offense did not miss a beat coming out of halftime, as a methodical drive culminated in a six-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Grady to Joe Hills that put the Sharks up by three scores, 33-13. Jacksonville cruised from there, as the KISS never came closer than two touchdowns for the remainder of the contest. Derrick Ross capped the Sharks’ scoring effort with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs, as Ross is now tied for the AFL lead with 20 scores on the ground this season.

In the win, Hills continued to etch his name in the Sharks’ record books. Having set the franchise record for receiving touchdowns in a single season two weeks prior, Hills broke his own team mark for catches in a season on Saturday. Through 15 games, Hills has 154 receptions and 54 touchdowns with a chance to add to both totals next week.

Grady completed 25 of his 29 passes, throwing for 180 yards and four touchdowns against one interception. Ross put together his best game of the year, racking up 64 yards and three touchdowns on his 14 rushing attempts. Hills totaled eight receptions for 69 yards and three scores, while Andrew Robustelli caught a touchdown as well. London Crawford totaled nine catches for 45 yards, while Tiger Jones totaled 26 yards on four receptions.

On defense, Reid set a new single-game franchise record with 13.5 total tackles (11 solo) to go along with four pass breakups. David Hyland recorded 9.5 stops, while Miller knocked down a pass to go along with his sack.

For the KISS, Thomas replaced starter Nathan Stanley, who went down on the third play of the game after diving for a first down. Thomas went 33-of-53 for 325 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Williams and Justin Wilson each caught two touchdown passes, while Morgan led the KISS with 13 catches for 117 yards and a score. Frederick Obi recorded a team-high total of nine solo tackles, while Terrance Smith notched eight stops and an interception.

Jacksonville returns to Sea Best Field on Saturday, July 30, as the team hosts the Tampa Bay Storm in the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

AFL’s Inside the Numbers: Week 17

July 21,2016

LAS VEGAS (July 21,2016) - Kevin Guy and the Arizona Rattlers are continuing to build their legacy as one of the top dynasties in the history of the Arena Football League. They are going to enter the playoffs in two weeks as the top seed in the National Conference, but prior to that game against Portland, they will have a chance to make a little bit of AFL history this weekend at home against Cleveland.
Rattlers Offense One of the All-Time Greats
The Arizona Rattlers have an outside chance to break the all-time scoring record in a season in terms of points per game. The mark to beat is 68.2 set by the Philadelphia Soul in 2012, and in order to reach that mark, the Rattlers would have to score 92 points this weekend against Cleveland. It certainly is a longshot, but the Rattlers have scored at least 56 points in all of their games this season, something no other team has done in the history of the AFL.
In a related story, Nick Davila also has an incredibly slim chance to reach the record for the most touchdown passes in a 16-game season in AFL history. The record is held by Chris Greisen, who threw for 117 touchdowns in 2007. Davila would need 13 touchdowns to match that mark. More realistically, the "Latin Laser" will have to settle for the second most passing TDs in a 16- game season. He needs five scores to surpass Justin Allgood's 108 set in 2010.
Sharks Receivers All Seeking Milestones
Arizona's offense is stealing all of the headlines in Week 17, but Jacksonville is a close second with all of the milestones its receivers are set to amass.
Joe Hills still has a legitimate chance to reach the scoring record in League history, though he has a lot of work to do in these last two games to get there. He is sitting on 51 TDs for the season and needs nine in his last two games to match the mark set by Damian Harrell in 2006. Hills is now at 66 consecutive games with a touchdown, the second-longest in the history of the AFL.

Tiger Jones has 1,030 career receptions, five shy of moving into third place all-time in League history. Lawrence Samuels retired with 1,035 receptions.
The third member of the Sharks' triumvirate of receivers, Reggie Gray needs one reception to join an elite crew of receivers to post 700 receptions in a career. There are only 19 other men who have done it in the past. Last week, Gray joined a list which now includes 17 men who have made it to at least 9,000 receiving yards in their careers.
Not surprisingly, with receivers like this, Tommy Grady is on the verge of some history as well. Grady needs 11 touchdown passes to reach 700 for his career. Only seven men have thrown for that many touchdowns in their career in AFL history.
Week 17 Milestone Watch
There are only three men in the history of the AFL who have at least 300 touchdown receptions for their careers. Damian Harrell, Chris Jackson and Eddie Brown help make up the de facto Mount Rushmore of AFL receivers, and now, T.T. Toliver can join that bunch as well. Toliver needs two touchdowns to run his career total to 300 and five to run down Brown for the third most in AFL history.
Rod Windsor is only one touchdown behind Mike Horacek for No. 9 in AFL history in TD receptions. Windsor is one of the 10 men who have amassed at least 250 receiving scores.
Portland's Jared Perry needs 32 receiving yards to reach the 5,000-yard plateau for his career. Just 10 active players have made it to 5,000 receiving yards.
Week 16 Quick Hitters
KISS receiver Donovan Morgan surpassed Mike Horacek for ninth place all-time in AFL history. Morgan, who announced his retirement effective the end of the season, now has 882 career receptions and counting. He also has the longest active streak of consecutive games with at least two touchdowns in the AFL at 11.
Arizona head coach Kevin Guy won game No. 116 in his illustrious coaching career last week moving him past Mike Dailey into fifth place all-time in coaching wins in League history. Collin Taylor extended his streak of consecutive regular season games with a receiving touchdown to 30, a Gladiators franchise record.
Rattlers' receiver Rod Windsor moved past his offensive coordinator, Siaha Burley into 11 th place all-time in AFL history in receiving yards with 10,823. To catch James Roe and move into the Top 10, Windsor needs 347 more yards, a mark which will have to wait until next season to reach.

Now, the KISS set their sights on clinching the last first-round home game for the postseason.

Gladiators Wrap Regular Season With 68-20 Loss to Rattlers

July 25,2016

Phoenix - In the team’s final game of the 2016 AFL regular season, the Cleveland Gladiators were defeated by the Arizona Rattlers on Sunday at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Ariz., by a final score of 68-20 in front of 12,823 fans. With the loss, the Gladiators finished the campaign at 7-9 to end the year in third place in the AFL’s National Conference standings. Cleveland will face the second-place LA KISS on the road in the first round of the AFL Postseason on August 6th with the time of the game currently TBD.

After the Rattlers registered a safety on the Gladiators’ first play from scrimmage, Arizona’s Anthony Amos returned the ensuing Cleveland kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown to give the Rattlers a 9-0 edge. Arizona pushed their lead to 15-0 less than five minutes into the game when Rattlers QB Nick Davila connected with WR Rod Windsor for an 11-yard touchdown strike.

The Gladiators responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Arvell Nelson to WR Larry Beavers to make it a one-score game, but multiple Cleveland turnovers led to 20 unanswered Arizona points to make it 35-7 Rattlers late in the second quarter. With just over two minutes remaining before halftime, the Gladiators’ offense perked up and delivered a 16-yard Nelson touchdown toss to wideout Collin Taylor that extended Taylor’s franchise-record streak to 32 consecutive games with at least one touchdown reception. Arizona added a late second quarter Davila-to-Windsor score, however, to take a 42-14 lead into halftime.

From the start of the third quarter into the early stages of the final frame, Arizona piled up three more unanswered scores to make it 61-14 before Taylor reeled in another Gladiators TD, this time from backup QB Stephen Panasuk, to make it 61-20. The touchdown pass was Panasuk’s first in his AFL career and it came with just 6:05 remaining in the game. A nine-yard TD pass from backup signal-caller Shane Boyd to Windsor with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter was the cherry on top for Arizona in a 68-20 Rattlers victory.

Nelson threw for 155 yards on 13-of-34 passing with two touchdowns, while Taylor led all Cleveland receivers with six receptions for 88 yards and two scores and Beavers caught five balls for 71 yards and one TD. On the other side, Davila turned in a 223-yard performance on 20-of-25 passing with six touchdowns and one interception, hauled in by Gladiators DB Joe Powell in the first half. Arizona’s Windsor reeled in seven catches for 75 yards and five scores while Amos led all Rattler receivers with 96 yards on six receptions. Arizona WR Maurice Purify was solid as well, catching five passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Next up for the Gladiators, it’s a Week 18 bye prior to the start of the AFL Postseason. The Gladiators will face their National Conference rivals, the LA KISS, in the first round on August 6th, with the time of the game currently TBD.

Stampeders complete comeback, defeat BC in overtime

CALGARY — What a comeback.
A late fourth quarter surge from the Calgary Stampeders helped them claw their way to a thrilling 44-41 overtime victory over the BC Lions on Friday night.
The Stampeders scored 22 points in the fourth quarter on their way to the comeback, led by quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell who threw for 364 yards, connecting on 29 of 44 passes and three touchdowns.

Greg Wilson had two of those touchdowns on three receptions for 118 yards. Bakari Grant had seven receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown.
With the Stamps up three in OT, Tommie Campbell out-muscled Shawn Gore to come up with the interception on a second-and-goal play, clinching the victory in a game that easily could have gone either way.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Jonathon Jennings, who looked like he was going to lead his team to its fourth win of the season, but two late-game interceptions by the young pivot aided in the Stamps’ victory. Jennings ended his night completing 26-of-41 of his passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns.
Emmanuel Arceneaux was one of Jennings’ go-to receivers on the night, making six catches for 128 yards. Bryan Burnham was even busier as he continues to emerge as a top receiving target in B.C., making nine catches for 139 yards and one touchdown.
The Leos began the game on a high note – scoring a touchdown early in the first quarter.
Almost like déjà vu, Rainey took it to the house with a 95 yard punt return to get the Lions on the board first. Just like he did against the Stamps in their first match-up of the season in Week 1, Rainey flew down the field on a punt return to score.

Jennings then threw to Anthony Allen for the two point convert who easily made his way into the end zone giving the Lions a 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Mitchell attempted to find Simon Charbonneau-Campeau streaking down the field, but missed, bringing Rene Paredes to the field who kicked a 46 yard field goal to get the Stamps on the board and cut the Lions lead to 8-3.
Jennings’ 40-yard throw to Arceneaux brought the Lions within five yards of the end zone but Calgary showed exactly why it’s one of the league’s top defences, halting the Lions in their tracks. On third and goal, the Stamps slammed the door in the Lions’ faces, stopping Rainey from plunging in to score.
Just when it seemed like Calgary was gaining some momentum, Eric Fraser intercepted Mitchell to bring the Lions back into scoring position. Jennings then punched into the end zone, giving the Lions their first touchdown in a second quarter all season to extend the Leos’ lead. Richie Leone made his 32 yard kick for the extra point putting BC ahead 16-3.
Mitchell and co. started to move the football down the field later in the first quarter but after a pass to Grant in the end zone was knocked away by Steven Clarke they had to head back to the sidelines. Paredes kicked a 27-yard field goal and the Lions led 17-6 with eight minutes left in the first half.
Wilson scored his first ever CFL touchdown after he gave Rainey a run for his money on who the fastest man on the field at McMahon Stadium. Wilson, who slotted into the lineup after the injury to Joe West, caught a pass from Mitchell and took off down the field 75 yards for the major score. Peredes’ point after was good and the Lions’ lead was cut to 17-13.
Near the end of the half, Paredes’ 44 yard field goal was good and pulled the Stamps within one point, heading to the break down 17-16.
Early in the second half, and under pressure from Calgary’s defence, Jennings threw a 39 yard pass to Arceneaux. On the next play, Jennings tossed a perfect pass to Shawn Gore who made an unbelievable catch right on the edge of the side line in the end zone to score his second touchdown of the season. Leone’s 32 yard kick after extended the Lions’ lead to 24-13.

Jennings’ second touchdown pass of the second half found Bryan Burnham in the end zone, and with the kick after complete, the Lion extended their lead to 34-19.
But Calgary wasn’t ready to give up that easily.
A 10-yard run from Tory Harrison cut BC’s lead, but after Paredes missed the convert, his sixth miss of the season, Calgary still trailed by nine points with 13:52 left in the game.
Jennings and co. kept their foot on the gas late in the fourth quarter, marching down the field, leading to Geraldo Boldewijn catching his first touchdown of the season and extending the Lions’ lead to 41-26.
Again, Calgary never stopped pressing.
With 2:11 left in the game, Mitchell found Wilson for his second touchdown, and catch, of the night to cut the Lions’ lead to 41-33.
With pressure coming, Jennings made a difficult throw that was picked off by Ciante Evans, giving the football right back to Calgary. With 1:06 left in the fourth quarter, Grant caught a Mitchell pass and stumbled into the end zone to pull the Stamps within two. Mitchell then tossed to Anthony Parker for the two point conversion to tie the game 41-41 and sent it to overtime.
In overtime, Paredes made his three point kick, putting the Stampeders up 44-41. Jennings and the Lions came close to threatening, moving to within first-and-goal down three points in the overtime frame. But with the McMahon Stadium crowd holding its breath on a game-altering second-down play, Jennings’ pass to the back right corner of the end zone was intercepted by Campbell.
Jennings and the Lions will look to get back to their winning ways next week when they take on the Montreal Alouettes. Calgary will hope to keep their streak alive when the Saskatchewan Roughriders come to town.
