Morris Scores Eight Touchdowns in Victory Over Tampa Bay

June 24,2016
Orlando - Quarterback Bernard Morris scored eight total touchdowns while leading the Orlando Predators (11-2) to a 56-33 victory over the rival Tampa Bay Storm (1-11) on Friday night. The #OrlandoUnited community was on full display as a season-high crowd of 13,527 packed the Amway Center.

Making his second start of the season, Morris completed 16-of-23 pass attempts for 131 yards and five touchdowns while adding 31 yards and three more scores on the ground. He hooked up Greg Carr five times for 43 yards and three touchdowns and Brandon Thompkins paced the receivers with seven catches for 54 yards and two scores.

The Predators defense forced four total stops in the game, logging three interceptions and a turnover on downs. In the secondary, Paul Stephens, Emanuel Cook and Terence Moore all registered picks while nose guard Willie McGinnis added a seven-yard sack.

Orlando jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead beginning with a nine-yard touchdown run by Morris on the game’s opening drive. Emanuel Cook intercepted Storm QB Jason Boltus on the ensuing drive and the Predators converted the turnover into points as Morris fired a 10-yard scoring strike to Thompkins.

Tampa Bay ended the drought early in the second quarter off a six-yard touchdown pass from Boltus to WR Prechae Rodriguez, but Morris would regain a two-score lead for the Predators a series later with his second touchdown run of the night.

Orlando attempted an onside kick following the score and Tampa Bay would recover as Prechae Rodriguez took it 10 yards for a touchdown. Rodriguez managed a five-yard scoring reception later in the quarter, but Greg Carr caught two touchdown passes before the half was out to give the Predators a 35-20 lead at the midway point.

The Predators built a 49-20 lead in the second half that started with an interception by Paul Stephens on the opening drive of the third quarter. Morris converted the turnover into his third rushing touchdown of the night and the defense once again denied the Storm a series later, forcing a turnover on downs inside opponent territory. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Morris found Carr for a third touchdown, this time from nine yards out.

Rodriguez posted his third touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter, but Morris responded a series later, lofting a two-yard score to Thompkins for a 56-27 advantage. Tampa Bay would get one more score off an eight-yard reception by WR V’Keon Lacey before the Predators ran out the clock to seal the victory.

The Predators head into a bye week before returning to the field for a road game against the Portland Steel on Saturday, July 9.

The Steel won the coin toss and elected to kick off. On the first-drive of the game Raudbaugh found Kauleinamoku for a 24-yard touchdown pass. The kick was good, giving the Soul a 7-0 lead at 13:11. The Steel responded on their next drive when Austin found Carter for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The kick was good, tying up the game at 7-7 with 8:55 left in the first. Philadelphia closed the quarter with a solid drive ending in a 1-yard run by fullback Jermaine Richardson for the touchdown.
Austin connected with Carter again for the 8-yard touchdown. With 2:54 left in the first, the Steel tied the game up 14-14. The Soul answered back as Raudabaugh found Ryan McDaniel for a 13-yard touchdown strike. After the first quarter, the Soul led by a score of 21-14.

The Steel started the second quarter off with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Austin to Carter. It was their third touchdown connection of the contest. The kick was good and with 11:33 to play in the first half, the Steel tied the game at 21-21. On the ensuing Soul drive, Raudabaugh found Kauleinamoku for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving the soul the 28-21 lead.
Austin responded on the next drive as he found Truesdell up top for a 3-yard touchdown, his first touchdown reception since Week 1. A Steel interception setup kicker Ernesto Lacayo as he drilled a 20-yard field goal with no time left on the clock. The field goal gave the Steel a 31-28 lead going into halftime.
After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless football to start the second half, Raudabaugh found McDaniel for a 7-yard touchdown pass. Their second touchdown of the game. The kick was good, and the Soul took the lead over the Steel 35-31. A little over a minute later, defensive lineman Sean Daniels picked off Austin’s pass and returned it for a touchdown. That interception gave the Soul a 42-31 lead with 4:07 left in the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter started off with 17-unanswered Soul points. With 41-seconds left, Steel defensive back Shaine Boyle returned a kickoff or a 57-yard touchdown. The game concluded with a Soul victory and final score of 59-38. The Steel return to Moda Center on Saturday, July 9 to take on the Orlando Predators. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. For all ticket information and all the latest Portland Steel news, head to www.pdxsteel.com.

Strong Second Half Leads Soul to Victory, 59-38

June 28,2016

Portland - The Philadelphia Soul (10-3) defeated the Portland Steel (1-11), with the score 59-38 in front of 4,468 fans at the Moda Center in Portland, OR on Monday evening.
“We started off slow and made some mistakes in the first half,” said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel. “Once we came back out for the second half, the team played strong on both sides of the ball. Big plays on defense and turnovers help set our offense up for success and that is what we did tonight.”
Soul WR and J. Lewis Small Playmaker of the Game, Shaun Kauleinamoku led the receivers with nine receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. WR Ryan McDaniel added five receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns and FB Jeramie Richardson tallied nine rush attempts for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Steel WR Rashaad Carter led the receivers with eight receptions for 71 yards and three touchdowns.
Philadelphia QB and Under Armour Offensive Player of the Game, Dan Raudabaugh completed 19-of-33 passes for 217 yards and five touchdowns. Steel QB Shane Austin completed 20-of-39 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns.
The Steel won the coin toss and elected to kick off to the Soul. Raudabaugh quickly found SK in the end-zone for a 24-yard touchdown and the Soul took the lead, 7-0. The Steel put six on the board when Austin connected with Carter for a Steel touchdown. The kick was good and with 8:55 to play in the first quarter, the Soul were tied 7-7. Jeramie Richardson found his first touchdown of the night with a 1-yard run, giving the Soul the lead 14-7. Austin responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Carter. The kick was good and again the score was tied, 14-14 with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. Raudabaugh’s quick 13-yard touchdown pass to McDaniel gave the Soul the lead at the end of the first quarter, with the score 21-14.

The Steel started off the second quarter with a 5-yard pass from Austin to Carter to tie up the game once again. Another milestone for SK was reached as he caught his 100th career touchdown on a 11-yard pass from Raudabaugh. Kick was good and with 8:56 remaining in the first half, the Soul led 28-21. Austin responded with a 3-yard pass to Nick Truesdell for another Steel touchdown. Kick was good and the game was again tied 28-28 with 6:02 left in the first half. Back-to-back turnovers on downs gave the Soul the ball and Raudabaugh’s pass was blocked and intercepted by Shaine Boyle, giving the Steel the ball with no time left. Lacayo’s field goal was good and at the end of the first half, the Soul trailed 31-28.
To kick-off the second half, Austin’s pass was intercepted by Tracy Belton. The Soul capitalized on this with a 7-yard pass from Raudabaugh to McDaniel for his second touchdown of the night. Kick was good and with 5:20 to play in the third quarter, the Soul led 35-31. Austin’s pass attempt was blocked and recovered by Sean Daniels for a Soul touchdown and the team widened the margin, 42-31. On the next play, Austin’s pass was again intercepted by Tracy Belton, giving the Soul possession once again. At the end of the third quarter, the Soul led 42-31.
A 34-yard field goal by Tommy Frevert gave the Soul three more points to start off the quarter of play. Another turnover on downs gave the Soul the ball once again. Raudabaugh used this and connected with Money for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The kick was good and with 4:10 to play, the Soul remained in the lead, 52-31. Austin’s fourth interception of the night was caught by James Romain and the Soul offense reacted with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Jeramie Richardson. Kick was good and with 50 seconds left in the game, the Soul led 59-31. In a final attempt by the Steel, Shaine Boyle retuned Frevert’s kick for a touchdown. The final score was 59-38.
Next week, the Soul will have their first bye week of the 2016 season. Following bye week, the Soul will host the Cleveland Gladiators at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA on Saturday, July 9. Kick-off set for 6 p.m.

AFL’s Inside The Numbers: Week 13

June 23,2016

LAS VEGAS (June 23,2016) - Whether you are relatively new to the Arena Football League or have been a blue-blood for nearly three decades, you know that the greatest rivalry in the League is between the Tampa Bay Storm and the Orlando Predators. These two teams genuinely don't like each other, and no matter what the records are for the two teams when they meet, the games are seemingly always close. Three of the last six meetings have been decided by two points or fewer, and seven of the last nine have been determined by just one score. However, dominance in the win column has been the theme in this series for Orlando, something the Storm hopes to change on Friday night.
Predators Look To Secure Longest Winning Streak in Storm Rivalry
This will be the 61st regular season meeting between Orlando and Tampa Bay. Orlando currently leads the series 33-27 against Tampa Bay, but it hasn't always been like that. In fact, for years and years, these two teams were separated by no more than two games and a few mere points all-time in their duels against each other.
Of late though, it's been all one-way traffic in favor of the Predators. They have already won each of the first two meetings this season in this rivalry, and they have a chance to finish off a three-game regular season sweep for the second consecutive year on Friday night. Neither team in this series has ever won more than five consecutive games, but Orlando is a big favorite to reach six straight wins over its rival in Week 13.
However, there is some hope for Tampa Bay for sure. The Storm only has one victory against its Sunshine State rival over the course of the last three calendar years. Orlando started Bernard Morris that day under center. Morris is likely to take over at quarterback for the Preds for the injured Randy Hippeard.

All-Purpose Yardage Record in Reach For Toliver
The accolades have been racking up for Toliver this season for sure. Just in the last two weeks, he has become the all-time leader in receiving yards and the all-time leader in receptions in League history. Now, he is on the verge of becoming the all-time leader in all-purpose yards, too.
Toliver enters this week with 20,974 all-purpose yards for his career. It is quite fitting that he is very likely to break this record in Orlando, a place where he amassed well over 10,000 of those yards in his career. The man's record Toliver is set to break is Barry Wagner, arguably the greatest Ironman to ever play this game. Wagner retired with 21,042 all-purpose yards, and with just 69 all-purpose yards on Saturday, Toliver will once again etch his name atop the history books in yet another category.
T.T.'s Triumphs
Toliver knows what it is like to be on both sides of the Orlando-Tampa Bay rivalry having played for the Predators for a number of years. This is going to be his 24th game in this rivalry. As a member of the Predators, Toliver had 80 receptions, 1,131 yards and 29 TDs in 11 games versus Tampa Bay. As a member of the Storm, he has had 77 catches, 997 yards and 24 scores versus Orlando. Assuming he amasses at least three yards in this one, Toliver will become the first player in AFL history to have 1,000+ receiving yards on both sides of any rivalry game.
Consider this as well. Greg Carr has 52 receptions, 689 yards and 16 TDs in his career for the Predators against the Storm, and that makes him the most accomplished wide receiver in this rivalry outside of Toliver amongst players on the active rosters of these two teams. Toliver has far better numbers than that on both sides of this rivalry.
Not only is Toliver one of the all-time greats in the AFL. He's an institution this classic rivalry as well.
Week 13 Milestone Watch
Last week, Jacksonville's Tiger Jones caught James Roe for fifth place all-time in receiving touchdowns with 281. Jones will go past Roe with his first score this week, while LA's Donovan Morgan could catch the former San Jose standout as well. Morgan enters this week with 279 career touchdown grabs, and two more will tie him with Roe.
Morgan needs 13 more receptions to catch Mike Horacek (877) for ninth place all-time in AFL history.
Arizona's Rod Windsor also has two of the all-time greats in his sights this week. With eight receptions against the KISS, Windsor will run down Siaha Burley (843) for No. 12 on the all-time receptions list, and with three beyond that, he will catch Cory Fleming for No. 11. Windsor moved past Greg Hopkins for No. 13 all-time in receptions last week.
Five TDs would put Windsor in the Top 10 in receiving touchdowns in League history, too. Windsor enters this week with 242 career scores, five shy of Siaha Burley's career mark of 247. Reggie Gray is coming off of his best statistical game as a member of the Sharks, posting 10 catches for 97 yards. Gray is now within sight of 9,000 receiving yards for his career. He needs 156 yards to reach that plateau, and if he reaches it, he will also go past the great George LaFrance for No. 17 all-time in receiving yards.
Philadelphia's Shaun Kauleinamoku needs two TDs to reach 100 for his career. Cleveland's Collin Taylor also needs two scores to get to 100 all-time. Philadelphia's Darius Reynolds is sitting on 95 career receiving touchdowns.
Portland's Jared Perry needs 163 receiving yards to reach the 5,000-yard plateau for his career. Just 10 active players have made it to 5,000 receiving yards.
Kevin Guy is set to coach his 155th career game including the regular season and postseason. That mark puts him past Jay Gruden for the ninth most in AFL history and ties him with John Gregory for eighth.
Steve Thonn will coach his 200th career game in Week 13. Only four others have done that, and the list is a de facto "Who's Who" of AFL coaches: Mike Hohensee (343), Tim Marcum (310), Darren Arbet (270) and Danny White (257).
Orlando's Brandon Thompkins is still within striking distance of the all-time record for all-purpose yards in a season. The Predators' star has 2,713 yards through 12 games, 1,094 more than anyone else in the AFL. He needs to average just shy of 250 yards per game to catch P.J. Berry, who holds the League record for all-purpose yards in a single season with 3,708.
Week 12 Quick Hitters
Collin Taylor extended his streak of consecutive regular-season games with a receiving touchdown to 27, a Gladiators franchise record. His teammate, Quentin Sims has scored at least two touchdowns in six games in a row. Only LA's Donovan Morgan has more games in a row with multiple trips to the end zone with seven.
Jacksonville's Joe Hills ran his streak of consecutive regular season games with a TD up to 63 in a row.
Hills' teammate, Tiger Jones became the third man in AFL history to reach the 14,000-yard plateau for a wide receiver. He now has 14,015 for his career and joins T.T. Toliver and Damian Harrell in the 14K club.
Philadelphia's Dan Raudabaugh didn't have a banner game last week against Arizona, but he did toss seven touchdown passes to get him to 587 in his career. Raudabaugh moved past John Kaleo for ninth place on the all-time passing TDs list.
In a battle of surefire Hall of Famers, Clevan Thomas got the best of Toliver last Saturday night. Toliver might have become the all-time leader in receptions on the night, but Thomas picked off his 81st pass in his career, second to only Kenny McEntyre in AFL history.
Shane Austin tossed his 250th career touchdown pass last week in Portland's loss at home against Cleveland. Five active quarterbacks have now reached that mark in their careers, including Nick Davila, Tommy Grady, Dan Raudabaugh and Bernard Morris.
The 80 points the Soul allowed last week to Arizona was the most they have conceded in a game in team history.

REDBLACKS Revenge: Ottawa wins Grey Cup rematch in OT thriller

EDMONTON – The Ottawa REDBLACKS got their revenge over the Edmonton Eskimos, winning the Grey Cup rematch 45-37 in an overtime thriller on Saturday night in Edmonton.
It was Trevor Harris, not Henry Burris, who led the REDBLACKS to victory after the reigning Most Outstanding Player appeared to jam the pinky finger on his throwing hand in the third quarter and could not return to the game.
Following a 19-yard rush by rookie running back Trevon Van, Harris found Brad Sinopoli in the end zone to give the REDBLACKS the lead in the extra frame. Greg Ellingson would convert on the two-point attempt and the defence did the rest, stopping Mike Reilly on third down to clinch the victory.
The win was the REDBLACKS’ first over the Eskimos since joining the league in 2014.

Harris was impressive in his Ottawa debut, completing 17 of 19 passes for 292 yards and throwing three touchdowns. Burris threw for 251 yards with a touchdown and a pick.
The final minute of the game featured a 39-yard field goal by Sean Whyte to give the Eskimos a 37-34 lead, but the REDBACKS rallied to set up a Chris Milo 55-yarder to tie the game as time expired and get to overtime.
Harris continued to lead the REDBLACKS offence in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 31-24 after a 38-yard Milo field goal. Adarius Bowman and the Esks responded with a 40-yard gain and Whyte added a 35-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 31-27.
It didn’t take long for Ottawa to answer back as Ellingson took a short pass 56 yards downfield. Milo hit another field goal to put the REDBLACKS back up by seven. Derel Walker delivered a returning blow, moving the Esks 64 yards downfield before John White punched in a touchdown to tie the game.
White finished the game with a rushing touchdown on 43 yards and 11 carries and a receiving touchdown on 51 yards through the air in his first game after missing all of 2015 with an Achilles injury he suffered in training camp.
The offensive showdown started right on the opening drive. A 20-yard reception by White was the highlight of the Esks’ opening drive that ended in a single.
Starting at midfield midway through the first quarter after pinning the Esks deep in their zone, Burris and the REDBLACKS went to work. Burris threaded a 19-yard pass to Ernest Jackson but their drive would end there. In the red zone, Van fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Kenny Ladler to end the threat.
In the final minutes of the opening frame, Arnaud Gascon-Nadon sacked Reilly in the end zone, putting the REDBLACKS up 2-1 with the safety. They would add a single on their next drive to go up 3-1 and carry a lead into the second quarter.
A pair of first downs by Jake Harty and Brad Sinopoli moved the chains downfield for Ottawa but they could not put any more points on the board.
Reilly and the Esks offence went back to work, hooking up with new weapon Chris Getzlaf for a 21-yard gain and Nate Coehoorn to move the team into field goal distance. Sean Whyte hit a 29-yard field goal to put the Esks back up 4-3.
A series of short passes from Burris brought the REDBLACKS into scoring territory where Van cut through a seam for a 14-yard rush. Kienan Lafrance scored the first touchdown of the game on a four-yard reception and Ernest Jackson caught the two-point conversion as Ottawa went ahead 11-4.
A 55-yard reception by Walker brought Edmonton into the midfield. Bowman caught back-to-back passes before John White found a hole for a 27-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game.
Following a 12-yard Sinopoli reception, Milo nailed a 45-yard field goal in the last play of the first half to give the REDBLACKS the 14-11 lead.
The REDBLACKS opened the second half on offence but couldn’t get anything going. Milo’s punt attempt was blocked by Ruben Frank and the rookie brought it back for a touchdown to give the Esks the lead back. The defence would get back to work as Odell Willis intercepted Burris to put the Esks in great field position. Edmonton would hit another field goal to put themselves ahead 21-14.

Not long later, Burris appeared to jam his finger and left the field with the training staff. Off-season signee Harris, in his first play as a member of the REDBLACKS, came into the game and immediately hooked up with Chris Williams on a 71-yard touchdown to tie the game 21-21. It was the longest pass of Harris’ career.
The seesaw battle continued but moved in favour of the REDBLACKS as Harris and Williams connected again, this time on a 37-yard major as Ottawa regained the lead, 28-21.
Reilly and the Esks picked up the pace on offence, quickly moving downfield and adding another Whyte field goal as the third quarter dwindled down.
This marked the first matchup of Esks head coach Jason Maas against his former team. The ex-REDBLACKS offensive coordinator left for Edmonton in the off-season following the departure of Chris Jones.
Next week, the REDBLACKS visit the Montreal Alouettes while the Eskimos get an early bye.
