Texans clinch AFC South with 12-10 win over Bengals play

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have had more than their share of bad luck this season with J.J. Watt playing just three games before season-ending back surgery and high-priced offseason pickup Brock Osweiler playing so poorly that he was benched last week.
But on Christmas Eve the Texans got a break that allowed them to hold on for a victory and clinch their second straight AFC South title.
The Bengals converted a fourth down play to keep a drive alive late in the fourth quarter, but four plays later, former Texan Randy Bullock's 43-yard attempt sailed wide right as time expired to secure Houston's 12-10 victory.
"It was meant to be," Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins said.
Tom Savage threw for 176 yards in his first career start after helping the Texans (9-6) rally for a win over Jacksonville last week after taking over when Osweiler was benched after throwing interceptions on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter.
The Texans knew they were in the postseason with a win after the Titans fell to the Jaguars earlier Saturday. But it didn't look good for them early with Savage completing just two passes for 13 yards and them trailing 3-0 at halftime.
Savage was able to move the offense much better in the second half, but Houston still struggled in the red zone.
"It was just taking a deep breath and realizing what we have on defense, what they're doing for us," Savage said. "All week it's just protect the ball and find a way to win and that's what we did. The guys really rallied around me and made some huge plays for me."
The Texans had a first down at the 6 early in the fourth quarter before the offense stalled and they settled for a 22-yard field goal that put them up 6-3. Quintin Demps got his career-high fifth interception when he picked off Andy Dalton's pass two plays later, but Houston couldn't move the ball and had to punt it away.
Cincinnati (6-8-1) regained the lead when Dalton found Brandon LaFell on a short pass and he took it 86-yards for a touchdown that made it 10-6 with about 11 minutes left.
A 24-yard touchdown run by Alfred Blue put the Texans back on top with about 9 minutes left, but the extra point was blocked to leave Houston up 12-10. That score was set up by a 21-yard reception by Hopkins.
Veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph said the adversity they went through this season makes clinching the division even sweeter.
"I think it makes you a stronger team, he said. "Everyone rallies together and fights for each guy on this team and the coaching staff and I think today was a prime example of it."
Dalton finished with 268 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception.
"The way this season's gone, when we've needed to make a play, we haven't been able to do it," Dalton said. "It's not one thing that's caused it. It's just the way things have gone this year. It's kind of been how our season's been, and it's unfortunate it's been that way."
Lamar Miller missed his first game this season because of an ankle injury and Blue had 73 yards rushing in his place.
After a terrible first half on offense, Houston finally got a little something going after halftime and tied it at 3-3 with a 25-yard field goal early in the third quarter.
The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams with a combined 12 punts. The Texans were a bit worse than the Bengals though and had just two first downs and 34 total yards with minus-5 yards passing because of three sacks.
The Bengals had a 3-0 lead at halftime after a 43-yard field goal by Randy Bullock at the end of the second quarter.
The Texans didn't cross midfield their first drive of the third quarter when Will Fuller caught a 14-yard pass that got them to the Cincinnati 47.
GREEN'S STATUS: A.J. Green, the Cincinnati star receiver who said earlier this week that he would play after missing the last four games with a hamstring injury, was inactive amid reports that he was unhappy with the decision to sit him. "He just had further testing during the week, and I conferred with the doctors and so forth, and they just thought the best thing for A.J. to have a full recovery was not to risk him this week," Lewis said.
HEY OLD FRIEND
Andre Johnson was in the locker room celebrating with the team after the game. Johnson, who spent the first 12 seasons of his career in Houston and is the franchise's career receiving leader, played for the Colts last season before retiring earlier this year after playing for the Titans. Johnson was all smiles as he congratulated Hopkins, who he mentored in his first two seasons in the NFL.

Christmas gift: Browns get first win, beat Chargers 20-17

CLEVELAND -- Joe Thomas watched the kick tumble through the air and sail right of the upright, giving the Browns their first win in more than a year. He felt a little lost.
"I was looking around for people to hug," he said. "There were a few tears in my eyes. I was really happy. There was a genuine feeling of joy. The Christmas spirit was amongst us, for sure."
Yes, Cleveland, there is a Santa Claus.
On the verge of infamy and further embarrassment, the Browns, who have spent this season being kicked around, ridiculed and beaten to a pulp, finally triumphed.
Forget 0-16.
Two losses from an imperfect season, the Browns survived a last-second field goal attempt and got their first victory after 14 losses on Saturday by beating the San Diego Chargers 20-17.
When San Diego's Josh Lambo missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt as time expired, the Browns (1-14) had their first win in 377 days. Cleveland's small crowd erupted in celebration, Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam cheered from their suite, and Browns players poured off their sideline as if they had just won the Super Bowl. Several players dropped to the turf in disbelief and relief.
"Finally getting that win ... definitely felt amazing," Thomas said. "You don't want to say it was like our Super Bowl, but it really was."
The Browns avoided becoming the second team to go 0-15, and no longer have to worry about joining the 2008 Detroit Lions as the only teams to lose all 16 games.
"I don't want that next to any of our names associated with this organization and so we got that monkey off our back," said coach Hue Jackson, who got his first win with Cleveland.
The Browns built 10-point lead in the third quarter and hung on -- defensive tackle Jamie Meder blocked a potential tying field goal with 3:49 left -- to snap their 17-game losing streak dating to last season.
The Chargers (5-10) lost their fourth straight and one that could sting for a while. San Diego's players had little to say afterward, and rookie defensive end Joey Bosa, who recorded two sacks, declined to speak with reporters.
It took everything the Browns had, and some help from the Chargers, for Cleveland to finally come away with a victory following weeks of injuries and losses.
"No one has ever given up," Jackson said. "I know sometimes it does not look as good we want to, but we have stuck to it and kept fighting. Just trying to do everything we could to win, and that is what you see tonight. It is an opportunity for our guys to do something that we have been trying to do all year, which is win a game, and we were able to do."
Quarterback Robert Griffin III sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter, forcing Jackson to bring in rookie Cody Kessler for the final 10 minutes.
Isaiah Crowell had two touchdown runs for the Browns, who couldn't come up with a clinching first down. They punted the ball back to San Diego and Philip Rivers with 1:46 left.
Without any timeouts, Rivers, who threw for two touchdowns and 322 yards, converted on fourth down by hitting Antonio Gates . He drove the Chargers to Cleveland's 28 with 28 seconds left.
But unable to stop the clock, the Chargers had to rush their field goal unit out. The normally reliable Lambo pushed his kick right.
"I let down my teammates, my organization, and I let down the fans," said Lambo, who was 24 of 25 inside 50 yards before Meder's block. "That is going to weigh heavy on me."
The Chargers had nine sacks, but hurt themselves with nine penalties for 92 yards.
INJURIES GALORE
Both teams sustained multiple injuries, with Griffin and Browns cornerback Joe Haden the most significant players to go down. A Pro Bowl alternate, Haden, who was already playing with two groin injuries, hurt his neck in the third quarter and did not return.
San Diego linebacker Denzel Perryman sustained a leg injury in the fourth quarter and was taken from the field on a cart.
CHARGERS COLLIDE
There was a scary moment in the first quarter when Perryman and safety Jahleel Addae collided.
Perryman was attempting to tackle running back Duke Johnson but missed and instead walloped Addae with his helmet. The crowd gasped at the violent impact and both players were dazed and required medical attention.
Addae took the worst of the blow and spent several minutes on the field before being helped up and walking off under his own power. He returned in the second quarter.

Inspired Jaguars knock out Mariota, rout Titans 38-17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Blake Bortles' best game of the season helped the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans 38-17 on Saturday and end a nine-game losing streak.
Bortles threw for 325 yards and a touchdown, and was on the receiving end of a 20-yard trick play that sealed the win with 5:25 remaining. Rookie Jalen Ramsey returned an interception 30 yards on the ensuring play to set off a raucous -- and long-awaited -- celebration in Jacksonville.
Bortles and the Jaguars (3-12) played inspired football from the opening kick and won for the first time this season at EverBank Field. Their last victory at home came Dec. 13, 2015, against Indianapolis.
Maybe they rallied around interim coach Doug Marrone. Maybe they played for ultra-popular ex-coach Gus Bradley, who was fired six days earlier . Maybe they just wanted to avenge an embarrassing loss to the Titans (8-7) on national television in late October.
Either way, it caused a lot of head-scratching and thoughts of "Where has then been all year?"
It was a debacle for the Titans, who had won three in a row . Tennessee needed a victory to set up an AFC South title game next week against Houston. Now, coach Mike Mularkey's team needs the Texans to lose at home to Cincinnati later Saturday to stay in the division race.
It might not even matter because Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota appears to be done for the season.
Mariota left late in the third quarter with an air cast on his right ankle. Rookie Sheldon Day sacked Mariota as he scrambled on a first-down throw, grabbing him around the ankles. Mariota stayed on the ground and signaled to the sideline. He pounded the ground several times as trainers rushed to his side.
They positioned the air cast and lifted Mariota onto a cart. Teammates and even some Jaguars patted Mariota on the shoulders before he excited.
Matt Cassel replaced him and later threw a TD pass to Delanie Walker. But Jacksonville answered.
Bortles connected with Allen Robinson twice for 37 yards on the next possession and then caught a 20-yard pass from Marqise Lee. Lee got the ball on an end-around and found Bortles wide open down the left sideline.
Bortles completed 26 of 38 passes and won for the first time when throwing for more than 300 yards. Robinson finished with nine catches for a season-high 147 yards.
MARIOTA STRUGGLES
Mariota completed 8 of 20 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown before the injury. He had a 3-yard scoring pass to Rishard Matthews in the second quarter, but he spent much of the day hurried and throwing high and low.
An even bigger issue for Tennessee was a grounded running game. The Titans entered Saturday averaging 144.7 yards a game on the ground, but DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry were mostly ineffective against Jacksonville. Murray carried 14 times for 42 yards, and Henry added 13 yards on four attempts.
RARE RECORD
Bortles and Lee became the first quarterback-receiver combination to throw TD passes to each other in same game since Week 4 of 1985, when Jim McMahon and Walter Payton accomplished the feat for the Chicago Bears.
INJURIES
The Jaguars had their own issues at running back, with T.J. Yeldon (ankle) and Chris Ivory (hamstring) leaving the game.
UP NEXT
Titans: host Houston in their regular-season finale.
Jaguars: visit Indianapolis to wrap up the worst season in franchise history.
