Kay began his AFL career in 1993 as the defensive coordinator for the ArenaBowl VII Champion Tampa Bay Storm. He will be the team’s offensive assistant coach, responsible for the development of the quarterbacks and receivers.

Gussman joins the team for his first stint with the Storm coaching staff. A 24-year veteran of the AFL, Gussman has over 15 years of coaching experience.  Soul Stars Ready for Another Championship Run

PHILADELPHIA
 – The Arena Football League today announced that All-Arena WR Darius “Money” Reynolds (6’2, 205, Iowa State) and DB LaRico Stevenson (5’10, 205, West Georgia) have been assigned to the Philadelphia Soul 2017 roster. This is Reynolds’ second season and Stevenson’s sixth with the Soul.

“Darius is a gamechanger,” said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel. “He is next to impossible to defend. He is big, strong and fast, and catches anything near him. You need a guy like Darius to separate yourself from being a good team to a great team.”

Reynolds led the Soul receiving core last season with 112 receptions for 1,447 yards and 38 touchdowns. In his career, he has totaled 337 receptions for 4,575 yards and 104 touchdowns as well as 42 rushes for 43 yards and 15 touchdowns.

“LaRico was an integral piece to last year’s championship season,” said Dolezel. “He is a savvy veteran that leads in the locker room and by example on the field. His addition secures what we believe is the best secondary in the league.”

In his five seasons with the Soul, Stevenson has compiled 259.0 total tackles, 29 pass break-ups, five forced fumbles and 14 interceptions for a total of 121 yards. In his career, he has totaled 400.0 total tackles, 48 pass break-ups, six forced fumbles and 19 interceptions for 146 yards.

Storm Training Camp - Day One

March 17,2017 (Photo Credit: Tampa Bay Storm)
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm opened training camp this morning at Skyway Park with the team reporting at 10:00 a.m.  Today marked the first of two non-padded practices, with the team donning helmets only.

While it was the first day of practice, a fan would never have known.  The team came in prepared and ready to take on whatever was thrown its way.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment,” said defensive back Dallas Jackson.  “We spent all offseason training and working on our crafts.  It’s important to come in with our ears and eyes wide open to learn as much as we can.”

Teaching is not something the Storm takes lightly.  Learning the playbook, and learning from each other, is what helps build a strong team.  The younger players will use this opportunity to learn from the veterans so that everyone can get better each day.

“I just tell the younger guys that my door is always open,” said center Ray McNeil.  “Teaching is a two-way street.  It provides me the opportunity to help guide the younger players, while also reviewing myself and seeing where I can improve.”

Another important aspect of training camp is team bonding. With a team that has a limited number of players returning from the 2016 season, it’s important that everyone gets acclimated to each other.

“It’s so important that everyone gets to know each other,” said mac linebacker Dexter Jackson.  “We need to come together as a team, so that we can achieve the ultimate goal of winning.”

While there are several new faces, there are some that are returning after spending seasons with other teams.  One of those faces is wide receiver Justin Hilton.

“It’s great to be back here in Tampa,” said Hilton.  “It feels right.  It feels like old times when I look around and see some of the guys I played with back in 2014.”

Look for camp to start moving faster as it starts to progress.  With only two weeks to showcase their skills, the players will leave it all on the field to make that final 24-man roster.

Coach’s Perspective:  “I’ve seen a lot of first days and this was a very good first day,” said head coach Ron James.  “We must get better every day so that we’ll know by the end of camp, we are a better team than when we first started.”

Player Spotlight:  After finishing the 2016 season last in sacks with eight, the Storm knew it needed to bolster its defensive line.  In doing so, the team acquired defensive lineman Caesar Rayford.  The six-year veteran joins the Storm after spending the 2016 season with the LA KISS.  He began his AFL career in 2010 with the Utah Blaze, where he would go on to earn All-Arena honors in 2011.  In 2013, Rayford went on to join the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL.

The 6-foot-7 lineman put on a show at practice today, disrupting the offense whenever he could and tallying several pass breakups much to his teammates delight.

Storm Training Camp - Day Two

“We’re just waiting to put on the pads”

TAMPA BAY – With the second day of training camp in the books, the Storm turned its focus to tomorrow.  The day the entire team has been waiting for.  The day in which the team puts the pads on for the first time since August of last year.

“It’ll feel great putting on those pads,” said wide receiver Kendrick Ings.  “This is a contact sport so you don’t get a true feel of the game until you get those pads on.”

Putting the pads on breeds excitement in the locker room.  With them, the team will be going live for the first time in over six months.  This is the time of camp where the players can go full speed and really begin to simulate in-game conditions.

“This is the first day of practice,” said defensive lineman Antron Dillon.  “Putting pads on is really the first day of practice.  This is what we’ve been looking forward to.”

With the addition of the pads, it also gives the players an opportunity to showcase their skills and separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

“When you put the pads on and get physical, that’s when you’ll see the cream of the crop,” said Dillon.

From here on out, the rest of camp will be about learning and simulating game conditions.  It’s go time for the Storm and there is no turning back.

Coach’s Perspective:  “We’re going to grow every day as a team,” said head coach Ron James.  “The team mentality is, no matter what the situation is and no matter what your temperament is, you will overcome.”

Quote of the Day:  “It’s going to be a great feeling putting those pads on,” said defensive back Cortez Stubbs.  “We’ll be able to really see who wants to come out and play and make this team.”

Welcome to The Storm:  The team acquired offensive lineman Joe Kaleta and defensive back Damond Smith.

Kaleta (6-foot-7, 315 lbs., Coastal Carolina) joins the Storm after spending time with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.  He began his collegiate career at Washington State University before settling in at Coastal Carolina.  The Utica, NY native saw action in several games for the Chanticleers at multiple positions.

Smith (5-foot-11, 185 lbs., South Alabama) enters his rookie season in the Arena Football League.  The Ecorse, Michigan native began his professional career in 2013 when he played for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.  He also spent time in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals.

Player Spotlight:  Today’s player spotlight is on defensive back Cortez Stubbs.  The four-year veteran joined the Storm in 2016 and quickly became one of the team’s most consistent leaders.  He led the team with 80.5 total tackles, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 13 pass breakups.  During the first round of the 2016 postseason versus the Philadelphia Soul, Stubbs returned an interception 15 yards for the score.

During today’s practice, Stubbs continued to show leadership skills by rallying his fellow defensive backs and leading by example.  He capped off practice with two interceptions.

The Five-Time World Champion Tampa Bay Storm will enter its 30th season in the Arena Football League in 2017.  For more specific details regarding single-game pricing and availability, please contact the Storm ticket office at 813.301.6600 or visit  www.tampabaystorm.com. Storm Training Camp - Day Three

March 19,2017 (Photo Credit: Tampa Bay Storm)
“Time to get down to business”

TAMPA BAY – The Storm hit the field running for its first day in pads.  After six months off, one would think there would be some rust, but that wasn’t the case at all.

“We got after it today,” said offensive lineman John Brown.  “In the offseason, and even the first few days, it’s all touch football.  But now that pads are on, everything goes.  You can hit and see what a game is like.  That’s why it’s so important.”

The players all showed the natural aggression that comes with pads.  Displaying the hunger necessary to make this team.  It was time for the team to get down to business and any observer could tell the team was anxious to get going.

“This is the first day of pads,” said defensive lineman Jordan Miller.  “A lot of people are going to have to make decisions on who they want to be if they want to make the team.”

Some players utilized the day to get better and also improve themselves with the pads on.

“We worked on a lot of things, especially working on becoming more physical,” said wide receiver Michael Lindsey.  “The receiving group worked a lot on route running and worked on timing with our quarterbacks.”

With the first day of pads out of the way, the jitters should be gone.  The team will continue to work hard to improve itself and learn from one another.

Quote of the Day:  “At the end of the day we’re family,” said Lindsey.  “Yeah, we get after each other in practice, but when it’s said and done, we’re family and nothing can break that bond.”

Hey It’s Your Birthday:  The Storm would like to give a special birthday shout out to mac linebacker Dexter Jackson.

Player Spotlight:  It’s been said that speed kills.  In the game of arena football, a speedy receiver can be a nightmare for opposing defensive backfields.  Storm wide receiver Justin Hilton is one of those receivers that can give defenses fits, something he did during practice this morning.

The second-year receiver rejoined the Storm after spending some time with the Orlando Predators in 2015.  His speed is a weapon that the team hopes to utilize in the future.  Aside from his speed, he also has hands.  During his first stint with the team, Hilton reeled in 38 catches for 500 yards and 11 touchdowns in just five games.

Storm acquires seven-year veteran defensive back Al Phillips

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm is pleased to announce that defensive back Al Phillips has rejoined the Storm.

“Al is a veteran player that understands the game of arena football,” said Storm vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch.  “We are happy that he is back with the team and we are looking forward to his leadership on and off the field.”

Phillips (5-foot-11, 190 lbs., Wagner) rejoins the Storm after spending the 2016 season with the National Conference champion, Arizona Rattlers.  The seven-year veteran began his first stint with the Storm in 2015 and quickly became the leader of the defensive backfield.  Phillips had a stellar 2015 season, leading the team with 107.0 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, three interceptions, a forced fumble and a single-season franchise record 39 pass breakups.

The Hialeah native began his professional career in 2010 with the Spokane Shock.  He would also spend time with the Milwaukee Iron and Utah Blaze.  For his career, Phillips has recorded 424.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 15 interceptions, 95 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Storm Training Camp - Day Five

March 21,2017 (Photo Credit: Tampa Bay Storm)
“The indoor game is a whole different animal”

TAMPA BAY – Arena football is a game that is entirely different than its outdoor counterpart.  The field is smaller.  There are nets in the end zone.  And the game is played indoors.  For some, it’s like playing an entirely different sport even though in the end it’s still football.

“The outdoor game is way different than playing indoors,” said defensive lineman OJ Mau.  “Everything is just quicker. The balls come out so fast, that we need to be able to make our moves quickly.”

In a game built for high scoring offenses, it’s imperative that the defensive lineman be ready to make a quick maneuver.  Typically, a ball is released within one to two seconds.  Those one to two seconds could me the difference between a sack and a completed pass.

However, it’s not just the defensive line that needs to stay on its toes.  The offensive line needs to be just as fast to face a pass rush that is always coming downhill.

“We have to adjust some of the techniques that we have in the outdoor game,” said offensive lineman Jeremiah Warren.  “With a quick three-step drive, everything is right now.  We need to be able to hold in quickly and be prepared.”

Learning how to play the indoor game can be quite the task.  However, with a good group of veterans leading the way, it helps to decrease the learning curve.

“When I first got here I felt rusty and lost,” said Mau.  “But I went back and studied the film and watched everybody.  The veterans like Dex (Jackson) and Jordan (Miller) really helped me out.”

And even though he’s a rookie, Warren is still a veteran to the game of football.  He uses this opportunity to teach some of the younger guys about what to expect in training camps.

“This is my first year in the arena league, but I try to bring the guys along,” said Warren.  “I tell them to keep working and focus on one thing then move to another.  I know how it was for me coming into camp, so I just tell them to keep their heads up and keep working.”

Player Spotlight:  Today, the spotlight is put on mac linebacker Dexter Jackson.  The six-year veteran rejoined the team this past offseason after spending 2016 with the Jacksonville Sharks.  Known for his aggression on the field, Jackson has made a name for himself as one of the best mac linebackers in the League.  Last season, he earned his first All-Arena selection after recording 24.0 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup.

After just a few days of training camp, it doesn’t seem as though Jackson has lost a step.  He’s still aggressive and disrupting plays, something the Storm will need him to do once the season starts.

Lights. Collin. Action.

It’s not Hollywood, but Cleveland has a solid footprint in the movie industry. Films like The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and of course, The Christmas Story were filmed in the Ohio city. Also, Halle Berry is a native Clevelander, and over the past few years, the city has become home to another actor.

Wide receiver Collin Taylor, or CT, is returning to the Cleveland Gladiators for the 2017 AFL season. When he’s not starring on the field, he can sometimes be found on the silver screen. With roles as an extra in The Dark Knight Rises, and Focus, Taylor shared, “I've had a few, awesome opportunities to play roles in a couple of major motion pictures, and they've been experiences I will never forget.” He may actually owe his second career to one of his siblings. CT admits, “I grew up acting in little plays that my sister would "direct" for my cousins and I during the holidays, so I think acting is kind of in my blood!” He enjoys the storytelling aspect of acting. He would love to pursue acting once his playing days are done, and maybe with some different roles. “So far I've been type casted as a "football player" throughout 3 movies and 2 TV shows, but one of these days I'll be able to break that stereotype,” joked Taylor.

Don’t think for one second that Collin’s skillset is limited to catching touchdowns, which he did in a franchise best 32 consecutive games, and memorizing a script. He also took home the 2015 West Park Station Karaoke Championship, one year after finishing runner up with former Gladiators quarterback Shane Austin. His go to songs? “I’d like to think I do a pretty good job of reading the crowd, which is key when singing karaoke,” acknowledged Taylor. “If the crowd is in a live mood, and pretty into the performances, I'll either perform "Cooler Than Me" by Mike Posner, "Ride Wit Me" by Nelly, or if I want to blow the roof off, I'll perform "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, a song that Shane and I performed in 2014.”

Entering his fourth season with the Gladiators, Taylor is as big of a fan of Cleveland, as the city is of him. CT pointed out, “The city of Cleveland has a very special place in my heart.  Not only did I fall in love with the city in 2014 when I first arrived; downtown, the flats, the suburbs, I think they're all great, but, I also felt completely accepted by the Cleveland people, and the Gladiator fans.” Taylor knows a good city when he sees one. He grew up in Carmel, Indiana, which was ranked the #1 place to live in the United States by CNN Money in 2012. He considers himself lucky to call Carmel home, and explains, “I truly believe that the people make the place, and we have thousands of great people in Carmel.” They also have a unique traffic design, as the city has been dubbed the “Round-A-Bout Capital of the US.” Taylor said, “Many people look at that as kind of a joke, but it makes it easy to get anywhere in the city in a short amount of time, as long as you know how to handle the round a bouts. Stop lights are overrated anyway.”

For any Clevelanders that haven’t had the chance to get to a game, Taylor sells it this way: “For football fans, you get exactly what you're looking for. Great players, making great plays, and feeding off the crowd at the Q. People who couldn't care less about sports would also love the experience. The marketing team, and game day operations team, put on a show during the game. Get yourself to one Gladiators’ game, and you will fall in love, I promise. If not with the game, for sure with some of these players' personalities, and their stories!

The Gladiators open their season April 8th, at Quicken Loans Arena, against the Tampa Bay Storm. Tickets are available now at ClevelandGladiators.com

Camp Confidential: Cleveland Gladiators

March 27,2017 (Photo Credit: Cleveland Gladiators)
Defensive additions have Gladiators poised for run in 2017

The Cleveland Gladiators had arguably the most magical run in the history of the Arena Football League two seasons ago when they went from doormats to the penthouse, a 17-1 season capped off with a trip to the ArenaBowl.  The Gladiators came up a game short of their goals that year by losing to Arizona, and the 2016 season ended up being a little more disappointing at just 7-9.

With 2015 Assistant Coach of the Year Ron Selesky now in charge of the roster, a huge overhaul, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, has Cleveland back in the saddle as a legitimate contender to perhaps host the ArenaBowl for the second time in the last three seasons.

Who's In?

For as talented as his defense was a season ago, Selesky knew that he needed to add some experience to his young guys.  Darryl Cato-Bishop, Arness Ikner, Alvin Ray Jackson, Rayshaun Kizer, Willie McGinnis, Terence Moore and Kent Richardson are all players with at least three years of AFL experience, and they are expected to step in and bring some of the confidence that only comes from having actual game reps.  Kizer was the best of the haul even though his interception numbers have tapered off in recent years.  He is still largely regarded as one of the top cover men in the League.

Brandon Thompkins, arguably one of the most valuable wide receivers and kick returners from last season, has also changed addresses, joining McGinnis, Moore, Richardson, C.J. Cobb and Larry Brackins in their moves from Orlando to Cleveland.

Who's Out?

One of the top rookie defenders from a season ago, Joe Powell is now in the NFL with the Bills.  It's a big loss for the Gladiators, as Powell picked off five passes last year and returned three of them for scores, but with all of the veterans who are coming to Cleveland, Powell probably won't feel missed.

A potentially sticky situation is brewing at the quarterback spot should anything happen to Arvell Nelson.  Nelson started the season as the backup quarterback last year, first to Chris Dieker, then to Dennis Havrilla, but he took over in May and threw for 70 TDs with 11 more on the ground.  Should anything happen to Nelson, Dieker and Havrilla are both gone.  Veteran Shane Boyd was brought in to be the team's backup after serving behind Nick Davila in Arizona, while Tanner Marsh will also have a chance to compete for the backup role.

Who's Back?

Quentin Sims busted onto the scene last year for the Gladiators.  He proved to be great around the end zone, scoring TDs on 27 of his 92 receptions.  Collin Taylor finished seventh in the League last season with 1,437 yards, and the combination of these two with Brackins and Thompkins could make this one of the most dangerous receiving corps in the AFL.

They Said It

"If you look at track records of the players that we brought in and you look at the track records of the coaches that I've got on my staff, I'll just say I feel really good about the situation we're in." – Gladiators head coach Ron Selesky

Key Stat

23 – The number of sacks the Gladiators conceded last year, the most in the AFL.  This came on the heels of a 2015 season in which Cleveland sported one of the best offensive lines in the League.  Bringing back Cobb after a one-year diversion in Orlando should help matters, but the real question is whether Nelson is going to protect himself.  When the Gladiators were at their best in 2015, Shane Austin got rid of the ball in a hurry and hung in the pocket when needed.  Nelson tends to hold onto the ball to make the big play, and that play is often made with his legs.  In the AFL, that generally leads to somewhat suspect-looking offensive line play even if the protection has done its job.
