HAMILTON -- A quick start and a stout defence was all the Hamilton Tiger-Cats needed as they handled the Toronto Argonauts 42-12 in the Mark's Labour Day Classic at Tim Hortons Field.  With a rematch scheduled for next Friday in Toronto, tempers were at their usual high in this one, aided by a one-sided first half despite Toronto crawling back into it in the second.

A career afternoon for Zach Collaros saw the former Argos understudy complete 26 of 38 passes for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Tiger-Cats defence came out buzzing with DE Justin Hickman recording his fifth sack of the season on the Argos’ opening drive, which ended four plays in after Swayze Waters took advantage of the 30km/hr plus winds to boot an 81-yard single to give the Argos an early single point lead.
Collaros then went to work and connected with receivers Terrell Sinkfield and Luke Tasker on the team’s first drive.

A facemask penalty on Akwasi Owusu-Ansah put the Ticats in the red zone. Hamilton would then strike on a Terrence Toliver touchdown to put them up 7-1. It was the fourth time this season that the Ticats have scored on their opening drive.
Pinned within their own five-yard line, Collaros moved the Ticats to midfield quickly with a 48-yard pass to Sinkfield. Collaros nearly connected with Matt Coates on a shovel pass but Hamilton had to settle for a field goal to boost its lead to 10-1 at the end of the first quarter. Collaros had 139 passing yards in the first quarter.

Momentum really started to turn in Hamilton's favour when their special teams got their second big play in as many games on thier provincial rival.
Neil King blocked a Swayze Waters punt early in the second quarter to put the Ticats in great field position right away. Tiquan Underwood hauled in Collaros’ second touchdown pass of the day and the Ticats increased their lead to 17-1 at 12:02 in the second quarter.
The Argonauts would turn the ball over after Trevor Harris saw his pass attempt tipped into the arms of Courtney Stephen as the Ticats offence started in great field position for the second drive in a row. A 10-yard holding penalty put the Ticats into Argo territory. The drive would end on a Justin Medlock field goal and the Hamilton lead grew to 20-1.
Hamilton continued to keep Toronto pinned on their own side of the field while adding points on offence. Again in the red zone, the Collaros hooked up with a wide open Sinkfield for an 18-yard major and increased Hamilton’s lead to 27-1, a score they’d carry into halftime.
It took until the second half for the Argonauts to get the ball into Ticats’ territory but the team could not advance the ball into scoring position and were forced to kick it away.
A 49-yard, wind-assisted Medlock field goal put the Ticats up by 29 early in the third quarter.

Harris connected with Kevin Elliott and used a rush by Chad Kackert to march the Argonauts past the midway mark of the field. An unnecessary roughness penalty helped the Boatmen and the team recovered a fumble by Chad Owens to keep the drive alive. Swayze Waters missed a field goal attempt and it was brought out by Brandon Banks, whose fumble while being tackled was recovered by his teammate.

With spirits heated on Labour Day, a penalty-filled skirmish ensued between the two teams that would pin the Ticats deep in their zone.
Toronto’s defence brought the pressure to Collaros, who fumbled the ball just outside his red zone and turned the ball over to the Argonauts. On 3rd and four and needing points on the board, the Argos opted to go for the first down and Hazelton got the job done. Harris then connected with Kevin Elliott for Toronto’s first touchdown of the game and Anthony Coombs scored the two point convert to cut the lead to 30-9. That would be the score at the end of three frames.
Waters field goal midway through the fourth quarter shortened the lead to 30-12.

Any hope the Boatmen had of turning the game in their favour was put to rest with just under three minutes left when Collaros connected with Sinkfield who shed a pair of would-be defenders and recorded the major.

Perhaps fuel for next week's fire, former Argos pivot Collaros was seen waving to his former team's bench as he exited the field follwoing the touchdown.

Backup tailback Ray Holley's 48 yards on the ground on the next posession set up a one-yard plunge by QB Jeff Matthews.
Next week, the two teams square off in a rematch at Rogers Centre on Friday night.
