» Preview: Esks face season defining game vs. Stamps
Mike Reilly was superb in his first start since suffering a knee injury in Week 1, finishing the game 22-for-40 and 352 with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Reilly was reunited with his favourite target, Adarius Bowman, who caught six passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
Kenny Stafford was also dangerous on the field, making two catches over 40 yards and notching 109 yards and a touchdown on only three passes.
The Eskimos defence was equally impressive in the victory as Cauchy Muamba caught two interceptions in the winning effort.
The beginning of the first quarter appeared to mirror last weeks defensive struggle between the two Alberta teams, as points were difficult to attain.
The Eskimos would be the first to strike on their first drive of the game. Reilly made a short pass to Shakir Bell, who then bolted up the field with the ball for a 41-yard gain. A 30-yard field goal from Sean Whyte capped off the drive to give the Eskimos an early 3-0 lead over the Stampeders.
The remainder of the quarter was scoreless until Mitchell went deep to Eric Rogers late in the first, but was intercepted by Muamba to give Edmonton the ball back. The Eskies were sure to capitalize on the strong defensive effort as Reilly found Bowman deep in the back corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the quarter
The Esks opted to try for a two-point conversion. Reilly found Cory Watson just short of the end zone, but the Calgary defence held strong and Watson was unable to drive in for the extra points.
The Eskimos defence was strong out of the gate and contained Mitchell to an uncharacteristic 14 passing yards in the first quarter.
Despite the slow start, the Stamps would put themselves right back in the game in the second quarter.
Edmonton dug themselves a hole with penalty trouble midway through the second, first being forced to give Calgary the ball back on a punt return after roughing the kicker, and then taking a costly facemask call to advance the Stamps 15 yards down the field.
Mitchell capitalized on the Esks errors and connected with Anthony Parker for a touchdown to put the Stamps within two points of the lead.
The Green and Gold’s second quarter woes continued as Kendial Lawrence fumbled the ball on the ensuing punt return. Ben D’Aguilar recovered the ball for Calgary, which would lead to a 20-yard field goal by Paredes to put the Stamps up 10-9 and give them their first lead of the game with 3:59 on the clock.  The score remained unchanged for the rest of the quarter and the Stamps entered the locker room with a narrow one-point lead.
Reilly took over in the third quarter, appearing to not have missed a beat despite being out for 11 weeks. Reilly threw an exceptional long ball to Kenny Stafford for a 47-yard touchdown to regain the lead and then completed a two-point conversion to put them up 17-10.
On a third-and-one late in the third quarter, Calgary took a gamble and decided to throw to a wide-open Tory Harrison, but Bryant Moniz's pass was high and just out of the reach.
Welcome back Reilly

Mike Reilly was outstanding in his first start since Week 1, throwing for 352 yards and three touchdowns passes. With the win, the Esks narrow the gap at the top of the West and sit just one game back of the Stamps... View Standings
Edmonton received the ball back and Reilly once again connected with Stafford, this time for 46-yards, to lead to a 21-yard field goal by Whyte.
But Calgary would not go down without a fight. On the next drive, Mitchell threw to Jeff Fuller for 25 yards to enter Edmonton territory and set up Paredes for a 50-yard field goal, his second of the evening, to narrow the lead to 20-13.
Paredes made another field goal on Calgary's next drive to finished the night three-for-three and trail the Esks by four, but that was as close as the Stamps would get.
Reilly continued his impressive return, fooling the defense with a pump fake and then finding Bowman deep down the field for a long 50-yard touchdown pass.
Despite the Esks impressive offensive and defensive efforts, the play of the evening may belong to Eric Rogers, who caught the ball in between his legs after it slipped through his hands for a 10-yard gain and Calgary first down.  But the Stamps could not capitalize on the highlight reel catch as Muamba made his second interception of the evening on the next play after the ball bounced off of his fellow defender and right into his hands.
The win was an important one for the Esks as they were not only seeking redemption for last weeks loss, but were also competing to remain in the hunt for top spot in the West. The Green and Gold now sit just one game back of the division leading Stampeders. Edmonton will face another tough challenge next week when they play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field on Sept. 19 while Calgary will return home to take on the BC Lions Sept. 18.

A cold rain fell on both teams but the Esks weathered it better than the Stamps did. I admit to being surprised. Edmonton's D had Calgary's number most of the night and Reilly sparked the O. I wonder, though, how long he can last if he keeps on taking beatings like he took last night? QBs usually have a longer playing career than RBs but with Reilly it may not be so.

The Rain was certainly a factor if not for the players but certainly for the fans . The group of guys I was with lasted until the bitter end but not so for the Wimps from Edmonton. As for Reilly He scrambled a few times but can't really say he played all that great. His passing completion ratio was only 55%. Not that Mitchell was much better with 61%. It was definitely the Defences on both sides that made the game. Penalties were about equal although some of them came at critical times for both sides that gave the opposition an advantage. The Reilly did take better advantage of those opportunities than did Mitchell. The next game between the two will be a different story . Especially since Cornish will be back in action, and the Stamps running game should return with a vengence.
