REGINA – Henry Burris threw for 477 yards, added two touchdown passes and a touchdown rush while Chris Milo hit a game-winning field goal with six seconds remaining as the Ottawa REDBLACKS topped the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-27.
The victory is Ottawa’s third in a row while Saskatchewan drops to 1-11 on the year.
The Roughriders carried a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter as a flurry of lead changes created an exciting finish.
Andre Monroe sacked Burris at midfield two
minutes into the fourth quarter causing him to fumble the football and
it was recovered by Alex Hall. However, the Riders would be unable to
take advantage of the new possession but a great punt by Ray Early put
the REDBLACKS in their own 10-yard line. On a third and inches call near
midfield, Burris extended his arm with the football to go for the first
down but it was stripped by Macho Harris for the turnover. McCallum
would miss the field goal and the REDBLACKS opted to give up the single
point as the Riders led 24-21.
Ottawa quickly moved down towards scoring territory as Maurice Price hauled in a 25-yard grab. Williams was tackled out of bounds by Jackson, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness to move the REDBLACKS deep into Riders territory. Johnson was downed just short of the goal line before Burris plunged in for the touchdown with 2:34 left in the game. Milo missed the extra point so the REDBLACKS sat with a 27-24 lead.
Jackson would make up for his earlier mistake with a 69-yard kickoff return that put the Riders in great field position. The REDBLACKS defence shut down Messam’s rush attempts and McCallum tied the game up with a field goal with 1:50 remaining.
Burris paced the REDBLACKS downfield, rushing for a first down and connecting with Ernest Jackson downfield to put Ottawa in the Red Zone with under a minute remaining. Johnson was shut down on back-to-back rush attempts but Milo hit a field goal for a 30-27 lead with six seconds left. Glenn’s last-second hail mary attempt was intercepted as the REDBLACKS secured the win.
The game was a back and forth matchup from the opening kickoff.
The REDBLACKS' opening drive started off with a completion to leading receiver Brad Sinopoli but quickly ended when John Chick recorded his 50th career sack, one that moved him into tie for second place this season.
Saskatchewan kept its first possession alive on a midfield third and one rush by Jerome Messam. The Riders would grab the early lead after Paul McCallum booted a field goal to put them up 3-0.
Burris went back to work on the REDBLACKS next drive, connecting with Ernest Jackson and Greg Ellingson to move the chains. On third and two, it appeared that Milo was lining up to kick a field goal but Thomas DeMarco took the direct snap on the fake and rushed for the first down. On the next set of downs, Milo tied the game with just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame.
The score would not be tied for long as Glenn quickly connected with Naaman Roosevelt, who ran untouched 71 yards for the first touchdown of the game and put Saskatchewan up 10-3 with under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Ottawa started the second quarter in great field position after a kick return from Kienan Lafrance. From there, Burris continued to move the REDBLACKS downfield through the air and was helped by a rush from Jeremiah Johnson. He then hooked up with Ellingson in the back corner of the end zone for a 17-yard major to tie the game.
Tristan Jackson found an opening crease on the kick return to move the ball up 42 yards. Messam would add a series of rushes that moved Riders to the Red Zone where Glenn connected with Rob Bagg on a 20-yard touchdown to put the Riders back up by a major, 17-10.
The REDBLACKS would score a single after Brett Maher pinned Nic Demski in the end zone.
McCallum kicked another field goal with two minutes left in the first half to put the Riders up 20-11.
Burris managed to get Ottawa into scoring position but the drive was
halted by a sack. Milo managed a 46-yard field goal to cut the lead to
20-14 as the teams regrouped for halftime.
The REDBLACKS picked up their first lead of the game in the second half after Chris Williams squeezed in a touchdown off a 25-yard pass from Burris. Milo’s point-after put Ottawa up 21-20.
A pair of facemask penalties moved the Riders up to midfield on their next possession. Midway through the third quarter, Glenn became just the seventh quarterback in CFL history to throw for 45, 000 yards in their career. The drive ended when McCallum booted a 49-yard field goal to give the 23-21 lead back to the Riders.
Burris would target Williams repeatedly on the REDBLACKS final drive of the third quarter but the Riders were able to get a number of defensive stops. Milo missed the field goal attempt and Glenn quickly brought Saskatchewan out of danger of giving up a safety but could not muster any points.
This game was the 215th career start for Henry Burris, moving him into fifth on the all-time list.
In Glenn's return from injury, he threw for 227 yards on 16-of-29 passing with two touchdowns and an interception.
Next week, the REDBLACKS host the Argonauts while the Roughriders stay at home to take on the Alouettes.
