CALGARY -- The Stampeders scored a late-second quarter major and the defence did the rest as Calgary topped the Edmonton Eskimos 16-7 Monday afternoon at McMahon Stadium to close out Mark's Labour Day Weekend for 2015.
The victory marks Calgary’s twelfth straight triumph over Edmonton. The last time the Eskimos managed to pull out a win against the Stamps was Labour Day in 2011.
James Franklin made his CFL debut last week with an impressive win over the Toronto Argonauts, but did not fair as well against the reigning Grey Cup champions, finishing 13-for-28 and 105 yards.
Bo Levi Mitchell was 24-36 with 251 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the victory.
Mike Reilly made his unexpected return at the beginning of the fourth quarter to try and spark his team, but his attempt fell short. Reilly tore his posterior cruciate ligament in Week 1 against the Toronto Eskimos and had not seen the field since. He finished the game 5-for-12 with 90 yards.
The first quarter of the battle of Alberta was scoreless. The Stampeders came close in the first 15 minutes when Mitchell connected with Marquay McDaniel for a 25-yard pass to put the Stampeders in favourable field position on their second drive of the game. The drive was spoiled when Pat Watkins intercepted a long ball in the end zone intended for Jeff Fuller.
Edmonton managed only two first downs in the first quarter and went two and out twice.
Calgary would strike first when Rene Paredes notched a 13-yard field goal with 12:50 left in the second quarter.
Edmonton responded driving down the field into Calgary territory. The Eskimos passed up a 53-yard field goal attempt and instead decided to punt the ball deep, resulting in a single to put Edmonton on the board and narrow Calgary’s lead to two.
The first touchdown of the game was finally scored at the end of the half, courtesy of the Calgary Stampeders. Calgary was certain to capitalize on its second trip to the red zone and Mitchell found Greg Wilson in the end zone to increase their lead with 1:39 remaining in the half.
But Calgary did not end its second quarter scoring there. Another Edmonton two and out gave Calgary the ball back with just over a minute left before halftime. Joe Burnett ran 27 yards on the punt return and Mitchell made quick work of moving down the field, finding McDaniel twice and also connecting with Rogers to put the Stamps within field goal range. Paredes made his second field goal of the game from 32 yards out with zeros on the clock to take a 12-point lead into the locker room.
Calgary had 12 first downs and 223 total yards in the first half compared to Edmonton’s four first downs and only 59 total yards.
Points continued to be hard to come by in the second half as the defensive struggle carried on.
The third quarter remained scoreless until Edmonton finally managed to make its way into the red zone. The Eskimos were able to string together a group of plays to set up Sean Whyte for a field goal from 23 yards out with 1:11 remaining in the third.
Reilly made his unexpected return for Edmonton at the beginning of
the fourth quarter to try and motivate the trailing Esks. He made his
mark early by rushing for an integral first down and then followed it up
by finding Adarius Bowman for 37 yards on the next play. Whyte capped
off the drive with an 18-yard field goal to put the Eskimos within six
points.
But the Eskimos would fall short of a comeback as Paredes made his longest field goal of the night from 45 yards out with a little over a minute remaining.
The Eskimos will have a chance for redemption when they face the Stampeders on Sept. 12 at Commonwealth Stadium.
