The Zach Attack: Collaros leads Ticats to commanding victory over Riders
Collaros threw five touchdown passes, connected on 23-of-31 of his passes for 381 yards and no interceptions in his teams’ dominating 53-7 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Chad Owens was the recipient of two of those touchdown passes and ended his night with four receptions for 58 yards. Hamilton’s pivot also found three other receivers for major scores – Terrence Toliver, Andy Fantuz and Brandon Banks – in his impressive second start of the season.

» Standings: Hamilton tied for second with Toronto in the East
Toliver was Collaros’ favourite target on the night, collecting five receptions for 139 yards. Fantuz ended with four receptions for 77 yards and Banks had three receptions for 58 yards.
Hamilton’s defence put on quite a show on the hot, humid Hamilton night – intercepting Riders’ veteran quarterback Darian Durant four times. With Emanuel Davis intercepting Durant early in the contest, Durant’s consecutive pass attempts without an interception record was ended at 323 attempts.
Saskatchewan’s pivot still remains the first, and only, CFL player to reach 300+ attempts and 12 consecutive starts without throwing an interception. He finished his night connecting on 18-of-28 of his passes for 235 yards.
The Ticats defence also held the Roughriders to just seven points – none of which were touchdowns.
The Ticats’ first possession of the ball game was a nine play, 60 yard drive that saw Collaros make use of four different receivers to march his team down the field.
He first found Owens, then Fantuz, Toliver and finally Spencer Watt to bring the Tabbies to the Saskatchewan 14 yard line. Collaros then tried to find Luke Tasker in the end zone but his pass was incomplete.
On his next throw, Collaros searched for Carl-Oliver Prime but again, his pass was incomplete, bringing Brett Maher to the field. Maher made his 22 yard attempt to put Hamilton up 3-0.
A quick two-and-out for the Riders on their first possession, even after back-to-back completions from quarterback Durant, brought Josh Bartel into the game to kick a 38 yard punt that was returned by Banks for seven yards.
The ‘Cats started their second possession of the ball game right where they left off the first. Fantuz scored the Tabbies’ first major score of the contest, after Collaros’ pass was tipped twice and right into Fantuz’ hands who ran into the end zone for a 37 yard touchdown.
Maher made his 32 yard convert to put the ‘Cats up 10-0.
Hamilton’s next possession ended with Maher kicking another field goal, this time from 12 yards out, to put the ‘Cats up 13-0 with less than a minute left in the first quarter.
John Chick, a former Roughrider, got his revenge on his former team, sacking Durant in the first play of the second quarter.
Collaros threw a 58 yard pass to Banks, Hamilton’s longest play from scrimmage this season, but the Ticats were unable to score on the drive. Maher’s three point convert was good and the ‘Cats were up 20-0 with 12:16 left in the second quarter.
The Riders were starting to gain some momentum and moved the ball down to the Hamilton 23 yard line with nine play 54 yard drive. Durant was sacked for the second time during the contest, this time by Ted Laurant, bringing kicker Tyler Crapigna to the field. He made his 43 yard field goal to give the Riders their first points of the ball game. The Tiger-Cats were still ahead 20-3 with 7:05 left in the first half.

Before the first half of the matchup was over, Saskatchewan tried to make their way down the field, but were no match, again, for Hamilton’s defence. Adrian Tracy intercepted Durant for a 12 yard gain on the Hamilton 50 yard line.
A 45 yard Collaros pass to Toliver brought the ‘Cats to the Saskatchewan 15 yard line. But it was Owens who scored another major for the black and gold and with Maher making the point after, the ‘Cats took a 27-4 lead to the locker room.
Saskatchewan started the second half still unable to find the end zone, and the Tiger-Cats forced Crapigna to kick a 24 yard field goal. With 12:17 left in the third quarter, the Ticats still led 27-4.
The home team found the end zone once again, this time it was Toliver who dodged around defenders to run in for the major score. Maher made his 32 yard point after to give the Tiger-Cats a 34-7 lead.
Saskatchewan started to move the ball down the field on their next possession, but on a third and goal, Rico Murray intercepted Durant’s pass intended for a receiver in the end zone giving the Tabbies the ball right back.
Durant was intercepted once again, this time by Courtney Stephen, just before the third quarter finished. The interception was Durant’s fourth of the night.
The Ticats kept their foot on the gas, and just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter, Collaros threw his fifth touchdown pass of the night to Owens and with Maher’s point after good, and Hamilton’s lead was extended to 41-7.
Saskatchewan conceded a safety, adding to the Tiger-Cats lead (43-7).
With the lead, and just under nine minutes left in the contest, Hamilton replaced Collaros with Jeremiah Masoli to finish it out.
With 7:33 left in the game, and Hamilton up 43-7, the Riders swapped their quarterback as well, and Mitchell Gale came into the game. Gale’s first snap of the game was a fumble and Laurent recovered it to give Hamilton the ball back.
Maher’s two point convert was good, giving the Tiger-Cats a commanding 46-7 lead.
With just over a minute left in the game, Hamilton took the ball all the way down the field and on a second and goal, Masoli passed to Tasker for yet another touchdown, and Maher’s 32 yard extra point was good, giving Hamilton a 53-7 lead.
With the win, and an Argonaut loss, the Tiger-Cats are now tied with Toronto for second in the East.
Hamilton will look to keep the momentum of their dominating win going when they head to Calgary to take on Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stampeders.
The Roughriders hope to get their second win of the season when they head to Edmonton for a tussle with the Eskimos.
