Too Much Horsepower: Stamps handle Lions in Western Final

CALGARY – The Calgary Stampeders proved Sunday why they flirted with the most dominant regular season record in CFL history.
A merely unstoppable Stampeders squad earned their second grey Cup berth in three years with a 42-15 win over the BC Lions Sunday afternoon in the 2016 Western Final in front of  32,115 at McMahon Stadium.
Calgary will now take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS next Sunday in the 104th Grey Cup presented by Shaw at BMO Field in Toronto.
Poised in the pocket all day long, Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was sharp from kickoff, completing 21 of 28 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns in the win.  Meanwhile, DaVaris Daniels and Marquay McDaniel both had over 100 yards receiving on the day.

The Stampeders locked up first place back in early October and with a bye in the final week of the regular season, many outside the Stampeders camp worried that rust would set in for a team that breezed through the CFL all year.
Those assumptions of rust were silenced quickly as the Stampders had an 8-0 lead before the game was three minutes old.  RB Roy Finch’s 46-yard opening kickoff return set up Mitchell at midfield.  A quick reception to Bakari Grant for 18 yards and a 30-yard pass interference call set up a three-yard touchdown reception by Lemar Durant.  A Kemar two-point conversion gave Calgary the early lead and the momentum.
While Mitchell was hot out the gate his defence was creating issues for his counterpart, Jonathan Jennings passed for 41 yards in the first quarter at the control of the BC offence. Despite not putting points on the board, he did however, keep the Lions in good field position by relying on completions to Emmanuel Arceneaux and excellent punt coverage by the Leos special teams unit.
Arceneaux was a game time decision and his availability for this game was much talked about throughout the week after he sustained a concussion in last week’s Western Semi-Final vs. Winnipeg.
The Lions defence did their part on two consecutive drives by holding the Stamps to a pair of stalled drives.  On the following series however, Mitchell would pick them a part.
Mitchell dug the Stamps out of the shadow of their own goalposts and methodically marched a 12-play, 103 yard touchdown drive to start the second half which was capped off by a 32-yard McDaniel touchdown reception.

With Mitchell rollin’, the Stampeders defence continued to swarm Jennings and the Lions, keeping the sophomore quarterback on his side of centre for the majority of the first half.
With just over four minutes remaining in the second half, Calgary took a strangle-hold on the game, courtesy the West Division’s Most Outstanding Rookie nominee.  Daniels ran a wheel route down the far sideline, got in behind coverage and hauled in a perfectly thrown ball in stride, racing 76-yards for another Stampeders touchdown and a commanding 22-0 lead.
After the Stamps added a field goal, they put an exclamation point on Jennings’ tough outing when DB Jamar Wall picked off a pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown heading into half.
With the Lions down 32-0 and Jennings only passing for 98 yards, Travis Lulay entered the game when BC came out of the locker room for the third quarter.   He promptly completed a pass to Terrell Sinkfield Jr for 51 yards before getting the Lions on the board with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Arceneaux.  They failed to execute on the ensuing two-point conversion.
The teams traded turnovers – both generating interceptions in their own endzones to stall drives – before Jennings re-entered the game for the final quarter.
Any hopes for a BC comeback after the early second half major and two turnovers were dashed with 8:29 left in the game when Mitchell wrapped up a 9-play, 85-yard drive with a pass to Durant for his second major of the game to push the lead to 39-7.
Drew Tate entered the game shortly thereafter and closed out the win for Calgary.
The Stampeders will fly to Toronto on Tuesday to prepare to take on the REDBLACKS.  The Lions will head back to Vancouver tonight and clean out their lockers early next week.
