Johnson, Lions outrun Riders in last game at Mosaic

REGINA — Jeremiah Johnson ran for a touchdown while Jonathon Jennings threw for two, leading the BC Lions to a 24-6 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the final game at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night.
Johnson’s four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, his seventh of the season, gave the Lions an 8-0 lead and they never looked back en route to their 11th win of the season.
While Saturday’s contest had playoff implications for the Lions, who moved into sole possession of second in the West and can clinch a home playoff game with a win next weekend, it was also the Riders’ final home game of the season and the last before the team moves into its new digs at New Mosaic Stadium next spring.
Emmanuel Arceneaux and Terrell Sinkfield each caught a touchdown pass for the Leos but the bigger story for the Lions was the play of their defence, which forced a key first-quarter fumble, recorded seven sacks and didn’t allow a single touchdown on the night.

The Riders were led by a tag team of quarterbacks made up of Darian Durant and Jake Waters, the two playing intermittently with the 24-year-old Waters getting his first taste of action as a pro — but in the end that offence could must little against a white and orange defence that appears to be hitting its peak.
Durant threw for 163 yards on 15-of-28 passing while Waters completed three of five passes for 40 yards. Caleb Holley caught a game-high seven passes for 80 yards for the Green and White.
First-year BC Lion Johnson keyed a Lions’ offence that continues to dominate on the ground, rushing for 101 yards on 16 carries.
Jennings threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted once during a 19-of-32 effort.
After all of the emotions leading up to the final farewell at Mosaic, the stadium the Riders have called home since 1936 with 612 games played along the way, it was BC controlling the flow of the game early on, starting with a return by Chris Rainey to the BC 45 on the opening kickoff.
The Lions failed to capitalize on the run-back along with a 19-yard run by Johnson on the first play from scrimmage, but the early edge in field position ultimately paid off for the visitors.
Not long after the teams swapped punts, Richie Leone pinned his opponents inside their own 10 for the sixth time this season — a play that won’t make the highlights but was critical to what happened next, because on the very next play, Riders running back Greg Moore, making his first career start, had the ball punched loose and recovered by Anthony Gaitor in the red zone.
Rainey caught a swing pass and found the edge for 10 yards and just a play later it was Johnson putting on the shakes, bouncing outside then slipping the tackle of Matt Webster, putting BC ahead 8-0 following Arceneaux’s grab on the two-point convert.

Looking to get a closer look at some of his younger pivots, Chris Jones turned the offence over to Waters on the team’s third possession of the game. Waters went two-and-out on his first try while Durant got back in the game, connecting with recently-signed Phil Bates for a first down over the middle in the waning moments of the opening frame.
Durant had a golden opportunity to set up a touchdown on the next play, the final play of the opening quarter, but Ryan Phillips out-muscled Ricky Collins to knock the ball away and preserve the Lions’ 8-0 lead through the first 15 minutes.
Tyler Crapigna got the Riders on the board with a 42-yard field goal, but Jennings got the Lions’ offence moving again shortly after that.
It started with a throw across his body under pressure, which Sinkfield hauled in to move the sticks on second down. Then, on another second down, Jennings took off on a draw play to once again keep the drive alive, this time with his quick and shifty legs.
That second down pickup was a critical one because two plays later, Jennings put one up for Arceneaux in the end zone and the CFL’s third-ranked receiver in yards went up and out-dueled Ed Gainey for the football, scoring on a 36-yard touchdown to extend BC’s lead to 15-3.
Jennings remained dialed in late in the second quarter but the Lions’ offence was stalled by a rare drop from Bryan Burnham and another from Sinkfield, while Leone missed his second three-point attempt of the night leaving BC with just a single point as a result.
Crapigna’s second field goal of the evening cut the Riders’ deficit to 16-6 heading into the half.
The Lions came out in the second half looking for redemption following their missed opportunity. First it was Adam Bighill taking down Durant for his second sack of the game, while Marco Iannuzzi found an outside lane and returned the punt to the Saskatchewan 16 before tripping over his own feet.
On the very next play, Jennings went straight for the end zone and found an open Sinkfield for the major, marking the 24-year-old pivot’s 24th touchdown toss of the season and second of the game. Of concern for the Lions was Leone’s second missed convert of the game and fourth missed kick in total, although their lead was extended to 22-6 early in the third quarter.

While Waters and Durant continued to take turns at quarterback for the Riders, both defences settled in as the game went further along. Jennings threw his first interception of the game while the Lions’ defence remained gave the Saskatchewan offence nothing, maintaining a 16-point edge heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lions added a rouge on a 47-yard punt by Leone early in the fourth and neither Durant nor Waters could crack the code of Mark Washington’s BC defence, the Riders dropping their second straight contest and falling to 5-12 in their first year under Jones.
Wally Buono’s Lions aim to clinch a home playoff game with a win in the rematch with Saskatchewan next week. BC assures itself of a home playoff game with either a win or a Winnipeg loss.
The Riders, meanwhile, close out a campaign next week against these same Lions, a campaign of plenty of ups and downs but, lately, optimism for the future.
