‘The Manny Show’ leads Lions over Riders to secure home playoff date

VANCOUVER — Both Jonathon Jennings and Emmanuel Arceneaux hit milestones at BC Place on Saturday night as the Lions defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 41-18. The victory also clinched a home playoff date for BC.
Jennings surpassed 5000 yards on the season, joining Lions Doug Flutie, Dave Dickenson and Casey Printers in that category. Arceneaux jumped ahead of 100 catches on the season, becoming the first Lion to do so since 2006.
The Lions’ pivot played three quarters in the victory, connecting on 17-of-25 passes for 307 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, before being replaced by Travis Lulay. Arceneaux caught two touchdowns and 180 yards on 10 receptions.
Paul McCallum, making his first start since coming out of retirement, connected on all four of his field goals in the contest including one from 44-yards out.

Ed Gainey intercepted Jennings’ first toss of the evening – the pivot’s 15th pick this season. The Lions challenged that Gainey interfered with Arceneaux, who was Jennings’ target, but after review it was ruled it was not defensive pass interference.
The interception brought Mitchell Gale, starting under centre instead of Darian Durant, and his offence to the field.
Gale found Phil Bates, then Joe McKnight, who ran two yards for a first down, before throwing two incomplete passes forcing Josh Bartel to punt the ball away.
Once Jennings came back onto the field, Jeremiah Johnson ran the ball five yards and then Jennings tossed to Bryan Burnham. Burnham looked like he had the first down and then some, but after the Riders challenged that he was down by contact before getting the first down, and were successful, Richie Leone had to punt the ball away.
The Lions’ defence forced the Riders to a two-and-out on their next possession and Chris Rainey brought Bartel’s punt back 30 yards to midfield.
That field position led to Jennings orchestrating the game’s first scoring drive.
The Leos’ pivot tossed a 15-yard pass to Burnham then found Arceneaux for a 36-yard gain. Jennings then found Arceneaux again, this time in the end zone, for the four-yard major score.
BC attempted the two-point convert but after the pass to offensive lineman Tim O’Neill was incomplete, they went ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.
The Riders started to move the chains down the field on their next possession with Gale, and Brandon Bridge, making use of Bates, Boone and Nic Demiski. Bridge looked for Bates in the end zone but it was batted down by Keynan Parker.
Tyler Crapigna kicked a 28-yard field goal, giving the Riders their first points of the ball game and cutting the Lions’ lead to 6-3 with just under four minutes left in the first quarter.
The Lions turned the ball over after Johnson was taken down by Henoc Muamba and fumbled the ball that was recovered by A.C. Leonard. Johnson suffered a lower body injury on the play and needed help to get off the field.
The third quarterback for the Roughriders, G.J. Kinne, entered the game after the turnover and looked deep for Kadron Boone in the end zone, but Boone couldn’t make the catch. Kinne then tried to find Caleb Holley but it was again incomplete forcing the field goal unit to the turf.
Crapigna had a chance to tie the game, but missed his 39-yard field goal, adding just a single point to the Riders’ score (6-4).
After Rainey ran 35 yards down the field, Arceneaux became the first Lion in 10 years to have 100 receptions while also scoring his second touchdown of the first quarter. He also became the fifth Lion in franchise history to meet the 100 yard mark.
Jennings tossed a 13-yard pass to Arceneaux, who caught it inside the end zone as he fell and was covered by two Roughriders. Arceneaux’s ninth touchdown in his last eight games capped a four-play, 77-yard drive down the field. After the successful two-point convert from Rainey, the Lions held a 14-4 lead after the first quarter.
After it looked like Johnson was finished for the night with an ankle injury, he returned to the field in the second quarter.
Jennings found Burnham deep, tossing a 41-yard pass to the receiver who was covered by Ortha Foster, bringing the Lions into Riders’ territory. Johnson rushed twice, once for eight yards and then for two, before Lulay came on for the quarterback sneak on a third down.
Tevaughn Campbell got his first sack of the year as he took down Jennings for an 11-yard loss. After Jennings tried to run the ball himself and couldn’t get the first down on a second-and-21, the Lions’ faithful had their first look at 46-year-old McCallum since coming back from retirement. McCallum booted a 24-yard field goal giving BC a 17-4 lead with eight minutes left in the first half.
Two penalties started Saskatchewan’s next drive and when the Riders couldn’t move the chains, Bartel had to punt the ball away. But not for long, as the Riders got the ball right back.
Willie Jefferson stripped the ball from Rolly Lumbala, and it was recovered by Campbell to bring Kinne and the Riders’ offence back onto the field.
But Saskatchewan couldn’t take advantage of the turnover.

Jennings continued his chemistry with Arceneaux, as he tossed a 61-yarder, bringing BC to the Riders’ 16-yard line. Jennings took the ball himself for the first down, and then found Terrell Sinkfield for the Lions’ third major of the contest. The score capped a five-play, 85-yard drive and after McCallum scored the point after, the Lions held a 24-4 lead with two minutes left in the first half.
The Lions ended the first thirty minutes with 314 total yards, 141 of them coming from Arceneaux, while the Riders had just 73.
McCallum split the uprights to start the second half for the Lions, booting a 44-yard field goal to add to the Lions lead (27-4).
And when the Riders tried to start moving down the field, the Lions took the ball right back as Brad Turner recovered the ball when Gale fumbled the snap.
McCallum scored three more points for the Leos, as he kicked a 19-yard field goal to give BC a 30-4 lead. The score capped a five-play, 21-yard drive, that included a 13-yard gain from Arceneaux and an eight-yard run by Rainey.
The Roughriders couldn’t get a first down on their next possession after Gale connected with Rob Bagg but tossed an incomplete pass to Demski, bringing Bartel back to the field to punt the ball away.
Jennings kept it rolling on their next drive, as he tossed a 46-yard pass to Sinkfield, that led to McCallum kicking yet another field goal. The veteran kicker added three more points to the Lions’ lead (33-4) with five minutes left in the third quarter.
Kinne, who was back under centre for the Roughriders, tried to get things going offensively for his club, but turned the ball over on downs.
With the Lions up by 29 points, Lulay replaced Jennings under centre to start the final quarter. Jennings ended his night connecting on 17-of-25 passes for 307 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Lulay started right where Jennings left off as Burnham jumped up to catch a pass in the end zone for another Lions’ major score. With the point after, BC added to their lead (40-4), capping a 10-play, 60-yard drive.
Bridge stepped in at quarterback, as Saskatchewan head coach Chris Jones continued to rotate his pivots throughout the entire contest, and scored the Riders’ first major of the night. The score cut the Lions’ lead to 41-11 with just over eight minutes left in the game.
The Riders wouldn’t give up despite being down, as Greg Morris ran 33-yards into the end zone for another major. The score cut BC’s lead to 41-18 with just over two minutes left in the contest and was also Morris’ first career CFL touchdown.
It was too little, too late for the Riders as the Lions held on for the victory.
While Saskatchewan’s 2016 season ended on Saturday night, the Lions will look ahead to hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next week in the Western Semi-Final.
