Statement Made: Stamps dominant in win over Bombers
The Calgary Stampeders answered any questions about what kind of team they may be in 2016, putting together a dominant 36-22 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night in their home-opener on Canada Day.
Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-37 passing while Jerome Messam rushed for 135 yards on 14 carries, as the Stampeders combined for 33 points in the second and third quarters on the way to their first win of the season.
After trailing 7-3 midway through the second quarter, Mitchell orchestrated a run of 30 unanswered points including touchdown passes to Marquay McDaniel and Simon Charbonneau Campeau.
The Bombers added late touchdown passes to Darvin Adams and Jace Davis, but without Weston Dressler in the lineup had trouble finding a rhythm on offence or an answer to Mitchell and the run game on defence.
Willy, a week after throwing for 200 yards in the fourth quarter in a loss to the Alouettes, got hot in the fourth and finished his day with 358 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 32-of-43 passing. Running back Andrew Harris was held to 13 rushing yards on eight carries but contributed 87 receiving yards on nine catches.
Marquay McDaniel had a game-high 116 yards through the air and a touchdown on seven catches, while Joe West chipped in with eight catches for 91 yards.
In the end it was a resounding statement for a Stampeders team that finished 14-4 last season but faced plenty of answers throughout the off-season following a head coaching change and several key veteran departures on both sides of the ball.
The win marks Dave Dickenson’s first as a head coach, while the Stampeders move into sole possession of second place behind the BC Lions with a 1-1 record.
While the Bombers emphasized getting off to a better start on offence, it wasn’t happening early in Calgary as Rene Paredes’ 37-yard field goal gave the Stampeders a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Willy couldn’t get in a rhythm against DeVone Claybrooks’ defence through the first 15 minutes, but the Bombers’ special teams, after failing to convert on a fake field goal earlier in the frame, came up with the Bombers’ first big play when Macho Harris got in front of Paredes’ 49-yard field goal try.
The loose ball was scooped up by Julian Posey and returned all the way to Calgary two, and on the second play of the second quarter the Bombers cashed in when Matt Nichols found the end zone from a yard out to give the Bombers a 7-3 lead.
Also slow to start themselves, the early deficit seemed to give the Stampeders a punch in the arm.
A 15-yard catch by West and a 17-yard rumble by Messam set up a 38-yard field goal from Paredes, then after a defensive two-and-out, Mitchell got himself in a groove.
The 26-year-old completed passes to Kamar Jorden and West, then ran for 19 yards himself into Winnipeg territory. After a 17-yard completion to Marquay McDaniel and 10 more yards on a catch by Tory Harrison, the American running back finished the drive with a two-yard surge to put the Stampeders back in front.
With the ball back and a two-minute window to strike again before halftime, Mitchell went right back to work. Completions to West and Jorden and some hard running by Messam put the Stamps on the doorstep, then from the 27 Simon Charbonneau-Campeau hauled in Mitchell’s pass for the highlight-reel touchdown to cap off the drive.
The outstretched tip-toe catch along the sideline was reviewed but upheld, finishing off a six-play drive and giving Calgary a 20-7 halftime lead.
Halftime did nothing to disrupt the Stampeders’ rhythm. While Mitchell heated up in the second quarter, it was the Messam-Harrison combo doing damage in the third. Two 21-yard runs, one each by Messam and Harrison, set up a 36-yard field goal by Paredes.
On the next Calgary drive it was back to Mitchell again. The veteran pivot went deep to McDaniel for 41, then went straight to Joe West, who hauled in a one-handed 37-yard catch to set up a one-yard touchdown by national quarterback Andrew Buckley.
The four-play drive was quick and to the point and gave the Stampeders a resounding 30-7 third-quarter lead.
The Stamps continued pouring it on in more ways than one. Jerome Messam broke free for a 53-yard run, setting up a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to McDaniel to make it 36-7.
Darvin Adams gave the Bombers their first points of the second half with his second touchdown of the season with 9:24 left in the game. Winnipeg pulled to within 14 points with under three minutes left on the touchdown from Davis, but for the second week in a row it was too little too late for the Bombers.
The Bombers will look to get their first ‘W’ on the board with a visit to Tim Hortons Field to face the Ticats, while the Stampeders head to the nation’s capital for what should be a heated clash with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
