Masoli Magic: QB sparks stunning Ticats comeback win over Esks
In a game that will go down in the history books, Masoli completed a CFL record 23-straight passes, as his Ticats snagged a 37-31 win away from the Eskimos in Week 5 action.
At one point in the second half, a red-hot Masoli was 23-25 for 278 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the night 31-38 for 391 yards and three scores.
The Eskimos, meanwhile, had everything going their way in the early goings of the matchup. Mike Reilly seemed poised for a career day of his own before falling victim to an inspired Ticats defence.
After the Ticats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a 44-yard field goal by kicker Brett Maher, the vaunted Eskimos offence took to the field, and wasted little time flexing their muscle.
Fresh off an impressive 465-yard, two-touchdown performance in last week’s win over the Blue Bombers, Reilly’s opening possession was as close to perfect as humanly possible.
The veteran pivot picked apart the Ticats defence, completing all seven of his passes for 66 yards, en-route to guiding his offence on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown grab by Cory Watson.
The score was Watson’s first of the season, while the strike was Rielly’s eighth.
With 3:24 left in the opening frame, Esks kicker Sean Whyte connected on a 42-yard field goal to extend his team’s lead to seven points.
If the first half proved anything, it was that the Green and Gold offence was on its game, with Reilly leading the charge. Following a quick two-and-out by the Ticats, the Esks embarked on a lengthy nine-play, 68-yard drive that was capped off by a 22-yard TD pass to Derel Walker. On the drive, Reilly completed all six of his passes, accounting for all but five of Edmonton’s yardage. But Reilly and the Esks weren’t done just yet. Thanks to a 28-yard punt return by Kenzel Doe, Edmonton took over possession on Hamilton’s 35 yard line. From there, they began an easy march towards the endzone, with tailback John White claiming the Esks’ third touchdown of the half. Maher would tack on a 17-yard field goal with four seconds left in the quarter, cutting the home side’s lead to 24-6 after 30 minutes. Reilly was stellar in the first half, completing 21 of his 25 attempts for 223 yards and two touchdowns. The main beneficiaries of his opening-half performance were Walker and Adarius Bowman, who racked up 88 and 95 receiving yards respectively. Once the second half got underway, Reilly and his offence picked up right where they left off, as the QB found Bowman for his third TD pass of the game. With the score, Reilly moved into a tie with his head coach Jason Maas for eighth on the all-time Eskimos touchdown passes list. But the Ticats refused to back down without a fight. There falls a #CFL Record. Congratulations on owning the record for most consecutive completions!23!!!!!!! pic.twitter.com/lGICBGWPoh

Following the Bowman score, the Tabbies found the endzone on back-to-back possessions, with Masoli hooking up with Terrence Toliver for a 22-yard TD, which was followed up by a one-yard major by backup QB Jeff Mathews.
The two teams entered the fourth quarter with the Esks hanging on to a 31-20 lead.
Momentum was clearly on Hamilton’s side, and it certainly showed once the final frame got underway. Masoli was a different player than the one we saw in the first half, guiding his offence on an eight-play, 79-yard drive which was culminated by a 23-yard touchdown pass to Andy Fantuz.
Maher would miss the ensuing extra point, making the score 31-26 for the Eskimos.
Then, with 10:10 left in the game, Masoli and Fantuz connected again, this time for a six-yard score to give the Ticats their first lead since the opening possession of the game. Chad Owens hauled in a beautiful two-point conversion to give the visitors a 34-31 lead.
Maher connected on a 21-yard field goal, his third of the game, to solidify the Hamilton victory.
Next week, the Ticats head to the bye for a much deserved rest, while the Eskimos play host to the Blue Bombers.
