Soul Scored in 155 Straight Quarters
LAS VEGAS (May 13,2017) – The defending ArenaBowl champion Philadelphia Soul have consistently been amongst the best teams in the Arena Football League in recent years due to the amazing fluidity of their offense. Clint Dolezel and Dan Raudabaugh have their offense down to a science for sure after spending eight straight seasons together. The Soul had scored at least one time in 155 consecutive quarters before being blanked by the Baltimore Brigade in the first quarter in Week 6, ending the League record.
The last time the Soul were left with a bagel in a quarter was in the first quarter of Week 20 against the Pittsburgh Power in the 2014 season. Since that point, they scored in all four quarters of 38 consecutive games.
There have only been a total of 14 seasons in the history of the AFL in which a team completed a campaign without a single zero in a quarter, and the Soul own two of them from the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the only time in AFL history that a team posted consecutive seasons of perfection from a scoring standpoint.
The previous record for consecutive quarters with a score was the 2001-2003 San Jose SaberCats, who scored in 135 straight stanzas. The SaberCats are one of the six teams to have posted at least 100 straight quarters with a score. In those runs, four of those six teams, including Philadelphia, won an ArenaBowl.
Even though the Soul were shut out in the first quarter, they went on to pick up a 61-56 victory, their third straight game scoring 60+. In this run of 38 consecutive games without a shutout quarter, Philadelphia scored 60 points or more 21 times.
The Tampa Bay Storm now have the longest streak of consecutive quarters without a donut, as they stretched their streak to 22 straight quarters this week in their win at Washington.
