CALGARY -- Cauchy Muamba picked off Bo Levi Mitchell in the final minutes of the game to secure a 15-11 victory for the Edmonton Eskimos over the Calgary Stampeders.
The win, Edmonton's fifth straight, moves the Esks into a tie with the Stamps atop the West Division and secures a playoff game at Commonwealth Stadium. It was also the Eskimos' first victory at McMahon Stadium since 2011 and the Stamps' first loss at home this season.
The final frame opened with a single being added to the board for the Eskimos after they were forced to punt.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Stampeders recorded their biggest gain of the game on offence with a 31-yard reception by Marquay McDaniel. Jon Cornish powered his way through coverage for another first down as the Stamps sat at midfield but could not get closer to scoring territory and were forced to punt.
With 2:30 remaining in the game and on a third
and five in the Stamps zone, Mitchell connected with a wide open Eric
Rogers on the sideline as Calgary looked to rally for a victory. The duo
would hook up again as the Stampeders crossed the midfield mark with
just over two minutes left. Muamba intercepted Mitchell shortly after
and Edmonton ran out the clock.
Reilly finished the game with 264 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while Mitchell threw for 230 yards, a major and a pair of picks.
Both teams were locked in a defensive battle from the opening kickoff.
After shutting out the Eskimos on their opening drive, the Stampeders were the first to get on the board after Rob Maver booted a single.
Mike Reilly and the Eskimos offence responded with a six minute drive as he connected with Derel Walker to keep Edmonton moving downfield. He was unable to find the end zone on an incomplete pass to Kenny Stafford as Sean Whyte kicked a 30-yard field goal to give Edmonton a 3-1 lead.
The first turnover of the game went the way of the Stampeders. Cory Watson caught a pass but the football bounced out of his hands on the tackle by Brandon McDonald and was intercepted by Malik Harris to put Calgary just short of midfield. The Stamps could not take advantage of the turnover and were forced to punt at the start of the second quarter.
Walker and Reilly continued to hook up on offence but it was not enough for the Eskimos to move into scoring range. Edmonton would add a single from Whyte to increase their lead to 4-1.
Mitchell struggled to get much going early on against the league’s top defence. He was intercepted by John Ojo, who swooped in on a pass route and recorded his fifth pick of the year and his first in eight games. That pick would move Ojo into a tie for first in the league.
Edmonton would benefit off of the turnover as Reilly connected with Stafford for the receiver’s ninth touchdown of the year. The 33-yard pass was hauled in the back of the end zone and gave the Esks an 11-1 lead.
A pair of successful quarterback sneaks by Reilly kept the Esks next drive alive. Edmonton would grows its lead to 14-1 after a Whyte field goal with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.
The Stampeders responded as Rogers recorded his first touchdown in seven games in the back corner of the end zone. Cornish would punch in the two-point convert as the Stampeders cut into the 14-9 lead. Calgary would grab another point as the Eskimos conceded a single on the kickoff after the major.
On the final play of the first half, the Esks tried to squeeze in one more touchdown but Reilly was picked off by McDonald in the end zone as Edmonton entered the locker room with a 14-10 lead at halftime.
The third quarter had both teams locked in a defensive battle as neither offence could make any advances into scoring territory. It took until the final minute of the third quarter before the Stampeders could add any more points on the board, another single from Maver to cut the lead to 14-11.
Freddie Bishop III saw his six-game sack streak come to an end while John Hufnagel will need to wait at least one more week for his 100th victory as a head coach.
Next week, the Stamps hit the road to face the Argonauts while the Esks host the BC Lions.
