HAMILTON -- Rene Paredes booted a 37-yard field goal with no time remaining to lift the Calgary Stampeders to a thrilling 23-20 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday Night Football.
With the win, the Stamps secure home field advantage in the 2015 Grey Cup Playoffs.
In the win, Jon Cornish was solid, racking up 154 yards on 18 total touches. QB Bo Levi Mitchell was also solid, completing 25 of his 40 passes for 230 yards and one TD pass.
Making his first career CFL start in place of the injured Zach Collaros, Cornell product Jeff Matthews was looking to rebound following a rough spot appearance two weeks prior.

After Collaros left the field, Matthews completed 12 of his 20 passes for 157 yards and three interceptions in his team’s loss to the Eskimos.
On Friday night, despite being unable to register any offence on his first drive, Hamilton’s special teams unit made sure he had some points to work with.
Following a quick two and out by the Stamps, star returner Brandon Banks corralled a bouncing, line-drive punt by Rob Maver and returned it 83 yards to the house.
The score was Banks’ fourth punt return TD this season and sixth kick return touchdown of his career.
Hamilton extended their lead to 10 prior to the end of the first quarter, thanks to a punt single by Justin Medlock and a conceded safety by the Stamps.
The Ticats’ special teams group continued to chip in offensively, with Medlock bringing the Tim Hortons Field faithful to their feet with an impressive 57-yard field goal. The boot, which occurred with a gusty 35 km/h wind at his back, matched a career high for the Fremont, CA native set in 2011.
But with the wind now in their favour, the Stampeders offence went to work with a purpose in the second quarter.
Following a 51-yard field goal connection from Rene Paredes, Mitchell appeared to bring the Stamps within a field goal of the Ticats’ lead with a long-distance touchdown strike to receiver Joe West.
However, the Stamps were called for holding the score was called back. One play later, the Stamps were forced to punt.
A bizarre sequence occurred in the late stages of the second quarter, as the two teams turned over the ball on three straight plays.
First, Matthews had his pass intercepted by Brandon MacDonald. However, Calgary’s possession was short-lived, as Simoni Lawrence forced Eric Rogers to fumble, with Courtney Stephen recovering the loose pigskin.
Then, Michael Ford lost the ball on a five-yard rush, with his own teammate kicking the ball out of his grasp.
But just as you though the turnover fest was over and done with, the Ticats again turned the ball over, this time with Banks losing it on a punt return.
A few plays later, Mitchell hooked up with Marquay McDaniel for an eight-yard score, his third this season. The Stamps would miss the ensuing two-point convert, but would get another point back on the following kickoff due to rouge.
Then, with three seconds left in the half, Paredes split the uprights for the second time of the half, giving the Stampeders a one-point lead heading into the break.
Matthews’ first half was less-than-stellar, completing four of his nine attempts for 36 yards and a pick. His counterpart Mitchell on the other hand was solid. He completed 16 of his 24 attempts for 166 yards and one touchdown.
Much like his first half, the beginning of Matthews’ second half didn’t get off to a great start, as the rookie fumbled while carrying the ball inside Calgary’s 20 yard line.
Fortunately for him, the Stamps were unable to capitalize off the turnover.
The score remained 14-13 in favour of the Stamps heading into the fourth quarter. And it was then that Matthews and the slumbering Ticats offence finally woke up.
Aided by a pair of penalties that brought Hamilton's drive to the one yard line, Matthews crossed the plane on his own, givng the Ticats a three point lead with seven minutes remaining.
On the ensuing Calgary drive, Hamilton's D steppped up once again, with Bryan Hall tipping the ball at the line, allowing it to be nearly intercepted by Arnaud Gascon-Nadon, ultimately forcing the Stamps to punt it away with less than five minutes to go.
With two minutes to go in the game, the Stamps embarked on one final drive, beginning from their own 43 yard line. The Ticats appeared to put the game on ice, as Mitchell's pass was intercepted by Stephen. However, an illegal contact penalty by Emmanuel Davis gave the Stamps new life.
Calgary was unable to find the endzone, but tied the game with 53 seconds left thanks to a 46-yard field goal by Paredes.
After Matthews and the Ticats were unable to produce any late-game heroics and were forced to punt it away, the Stamps took over with nine seconds left, good enough for two quick plays.
It was then that Paredes split the uprights with no time on the clock, giving the Stamps their 11th win of the season. Matthews finished with 155 passing yards on 15 completions.
Next week, the Ticats will play host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, while the Stampeders will welcome the Edmonton Eskimos to McMahon Stadium for the third and final installment of the Battle of Alberta.
