REGINA -- Adarius Bowman led the Eskimos with 12 catches for 208 yards as Edmonton picked up its seventh consecutive win with a 35-24 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night.
Mike Reilly was also exceptional in the victory, throwing 29-for-39 and 377 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception on the night.
The bounces were in favour of the Riders in the first quarter, literally, as a pass bounced off of the fingertips of Bowman and into the hands of Junior Mertile. The interception set up Brett Smith to lead a quick drive, finding Naaman Rosoevelt for a 40-yard pickup on his first pass of the game and setting up the Riders just short of the end zone. Robb Bag was handed the ball on the next play, dropped it, but then quickly recovered the fumble and ran for a two-yard touchdown.
Sean Whyte’s 30-yard field goal on the ensuing drive put the Eskimos on the board and narrowed the Riders’ lead to 7-3 midway through the first quarter.
The Riders continued to break down the CFL’s best defence in the first quarter as the offensive duo of Smith squared took over for the Green and White. Brett Smith made a short pass to the Ryan Smith who then dashed past the Esks last line of defence and into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown.
It was speculated that rookie quarterback Keith Price might see some playing time in the game and was put in at the beginning of the second quarter. Price’s first throw of his CFL career was a 29-yard touchdown pass to Roosevelt to extend the Green and Gold’s chokehold over the Eskimos to 21-3.
But the Eskimos would show why they sit atop of the West Division as the quarter continued. Reilly connected with Bowman for a 21-yard pickup, followed by the pivot rushing five yards into the end zone on the next play for the Eskimos' first touchdown of the game to cut the Riders’ lead to 21-10.
Reilly and Bowman would strike again as the half neared an end. Bowman caught a pass from Reilly, broke through a tackle and bolted into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown to further cut the Riders’ lead to 21-17 with 1:38 remaining in the quarter.
Edmonton was not done there. A quick two-and-out by the Riders gave the Eskimos possession with just over a minute remaining in the half. Bowman made a 40-yard catch to set up a touchdown by Derel Walker to give the Esks their first lead of the game and end the quarter at 24-21.
Smith resumed quarterback duties at the end of the second quarter as the Riders’ lead diminished.
The second half began with Whyte scoring his
second field goal of the night on the Esks’ opening drive of the third
quarter to extend their lead to 27-21.
The Riders began a promising drive near the end of the third quarter as Smith led his offence steadily down the field. The pivot found Rooselvelt for a 13-yard pickup and then connected with Chris Getzlaf for another 10 yards to place Saskatchewan at Edmonton’s 30-yard line. Smith attempted to rush for the first down, but was tackled and fumbled the ball. J.C. Shermitt made the recovery to give Edmonton possession and the play would lead to a touchdown catch by Cory Watson to open the fourth quarter and further the Esks’ lead to 35-21.
Tyler Crapinga made his kicking debut for the Roughriders and notched a 22-yard field goal, the first of his CFL career, to end the game at 35-24.
The Roughriders will be in tough next week as they face the Stampeders on Oct. 31 while the Eskimos will be up against a hungry Alouettes squad on Nov. 1 as Montreal continues to battle for the crossover playoff spot.
